Can you still find a job over the age of 60 (Video)

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter
This is a question asked by someone over 60 who is frustrated with finding a job.
I’m Jeff Altman, big game hunter. I’m the Head Coach at JobSearch.Community. Today’s question is, can you still find a job at the age of 60? Man, you know, I remember when I first started recruiting, I wondered what was going to happen to the guys over 40. Over time, that number grew to 50 people.
Now the new number is 60 years old. I’m simply saying, yes, it is possible to have a job at 60. Confront everything you are reading about ageism.
See, part of what happens is we start to believe, and I’m in my 60s, we start to believe the bullshit that’s being thrown at us as a rationalization for why we’re being denied jobs. You see, yes, there is discrimination. What happens most of the time is that older people think they can slide into an interview, wing it and get the job without adequate preparation, without doing any homework.
This is a competitive market. And you’re competing against people who are equally skilled or proficient as you. This has nothing to do with age.
It’s about how you perform in the interview. Yes, I will keep repeating this. Yeah, there’s discrimination, like there’s discrimination when you’re 24 and they choose the 40-year-old because they say, hey, this guy knows a lot more than the 24-year-old.
More than 50 pivot points: Stop applying. Start positioning
People interview for the purpose of hiring, and they have an opinion about who will play a role in the organization. There is a way to prepare for this that can help you overcome your biases. So, I’m just saying simply, it’s absolutely possible, and it happens quite often these days, that people over 60 are looking for work.
That’s the truth. So, get over the self-pity. Start preparing for the interview.
Prepare yourself to perform at a high level. By the way, if you want me to guide you, send me an email at JeffAltman at TheBigGameHunter.us. I’m happy to work with you. Or you can visit JobSearchCoachingHQ.com. Register there.
There is a lot of useful information to help you prepare. But the real thing is preparation. The second thing is whether there is a market for what you are doing.
If you have generic skills, commoditized skills, skills that a hundred and one people can do, you have to show some flexibility in terms of location, salary, and a lot of other things. But assuming you have marketable skills, ideal skills for your market area, or are willing to move to a place where what you do is also marketable, you’ll find a job. There is no doubt about it.
You will find a job. Hope you find this helpful. Again, Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter.
