(Wilmington) Democratic White House candidate Joe Biden raised more than $ 364 million in August, breaking the monthly record in the United States despite a largely online campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The former US vice president, the Democratic Party, and their fundraising commissions raised $ 364.5 million in August, including $ 205 million online from small donors, his campaign team said on Wednesday.
The previous record was set by Barack Obama and the Democratic Party in September 2008, with nearly $ 200 million.
“This amount leaves me speechless,” wrote Joe Biden, 77, thanking his supporters.
“57% of the money we raised came from online donations from people like you who paid $ 5, $ 10, $ 20. This makes August the best online fundraising month in American political history, ”he added.
Preparing for his re-election campaign since arriving at the White House in January 2017, Donald Trump, 74, left with a comfortable financial advantage. But after winning the primary in April, his Democratic rival now has flourishing accounts.
Joe Biden, however, called on his supporters to “keep breaking records if we are to have a chance of winning”.
“Trump’s cash machine is still there,” he said. “And you can be sure that they will invest everything in the attacks and slanders against me, against Kamala and against our team,” he continued, quoting his running mate, Kamala Harris.
The announcement that he had chosen the senator, the first black candidate of Indian origin for the American vice-presidency, had galvanized donors: $ 26 million raised in 24 hours, revealed Joe Biden on August 12.
In July, Donald Trump and the Republican Party had raised $ 165 million, compared to $ 140 million for the Democrats.
