Chie Shimizu’s symbolic sculpture

Chie Shimizu’s sculptures have mysterious undercurrents rooted in the exploration of “the meaning of human survival.” Born in Japan and now in Queens, New York, the artist has crafted these seductive characters over the past few decades, moving between different scales and texture methods.

“My job is about the eternal question that arises throughout life: what is the meaning of human existence?” the artist said. “Human life seems small and easy to be gigantic to nature, but every life is unique and vibrant, so I believe the short span of our lives is comparable to something that otherwise seems so large. … The subject of sculpture is always a general, not a person, not a person, which is my life related to the things that are sculptured, which may be the things that are sculptured. Most of my work is “untitled”, and my intention is to talk directly to the inner senses while avoiding my desires.
