Steam and Itch.io is pulling the “porn” game. Critics say it’s a slope to more censorship
It’s too late On the evening of July 23, the game’s developers tagged NSFW on the digital market itch.io and began to notice something strange. Their work – neither the game navigation about diet during teenage years or the game about Dick Pictures, was not seen in the search results.
“There is no notice or anything,” said Robert Yang, a former NYU Game Center educator and developer, whose work explores the history and culture of homosexuality. “Just discovered through the Blues.”
itch.io is presuming or removing it from its search index, all adult NSFW games, no matter why they are tagged. This approach is marked as this approach for a variety of reasons, whether it is due to sexual themes, discussions of mental health or stories involving triggering the topic. On itch.io, founder Leaf Corcoran said the “sudden and destructive” move was a direct result of a collective shout-out of ongoing campaigns, which critics called “anti-boys.” The group recently targeted payment processors for itching and steam, urging banking services to stop doing business with these platforms due to the content they host, a strategy called financial censorship. The move comes a week after Steam took hundreds of adult titles from its own storefront, allegedly containing instances of abuse, rape or incest, with collective shouting claiming “this is the result of our campaign.”

Corcoran did not respond to a request for comment. Valve, which owns the Steam Distribution platform, did not respond to multiple requests for comment. The company said in a statement to PC gamers that “recently notified certain Steam games that may violate the rules and standards stipulated by our payment processors and their associated card networks and banks” and thus caused these games.
Payment processors hold a lot of power over the companies that use them. When companies like MasterCard or Visa Ulw Support, it affects the platform’s ability to get payments. Conservative groups sometimes use these financial institutions to put pressure on companies to change their services. Insiders in the adult entertainment industry have seen similar campaigns lobbying platforms such as Pornhub and Onlyfans, calling these strategies a form of censorship that can hurt and be useless, vulnerable creators. The quality clearance of itch is performed on a wide scale, with obviously little context in mind, and has affected some queer, women or people of color, and even award-winning projects.
On the itchy website, Corcoran called the site a “critical moment.” “Our ability to process payments is critical to every creator on the platform,” Corcoran wrote. “To ensure we can continue to operate and provide markets for all developers, we must prioritize our relationship with payment partners and take compliance steps immediately.”
Fist in the wallet
In March, developer Zerat Games released an adult-only game called Steam and itch.io No mercy. The game calls itself an incest and “male domination” game, which includes “inevitably involuntary gender.” It has aroused international outrage, including Peter Kyle, a British technical secretary and member of parliament. After a strong backlash, the match was pulled from the UK, Australia and Canada storefronts, and Zerat removed it from the others.
