Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, the big hunter. Today, I have an interesting question, and your instinctive programming on how to answer this question are all wrong. The question is, what are you really afraid of? Catch that one.

What are you really afraid of? Nowadays, most people are programmed to turn weakness into a force. But in the field of emotional intelligence, in the field. . . You will see this, but not the traditional flip. You do need to reveal something you are not very good at.

Now, hiring a manager asking this question doesn’t want you to deflect it. They want something real. They want meat on their bones.

It takes your thoughts because in a sense you don’t want to reveal something about your work, right? You don’t want to reveal something in their assessment that will cause problems for you, but you don’t want to give them something vulnerable either. So the trick is to give them something and say, say, I don’t know if this is particularly relevant to the work, but one thing I know is that is relevant, my focus is really my strengths and trying to make my strengths quite maximise, so you know, yes, yes, I do want to make sure your strengths are strong at the end of the day to make sure your strengths are the best you can get, and I’m going to work hard, I can get the best you can get in other ways to get in order for me to get in other ways. So you get it.

You have to give them something, you have to give them some important meanings that don’t hurt you in their assessment, but give them anything, or give them anything or give them something trivial isn’t good enough, and then flip it over and say you tend to focus on your strengths and play a role for those people while trying to improve what you’re underjusting.
