Huddersfield University and Coursera launch online bachelor of science in data science to meet global demand for data talent

The University of Huddersfield announced today that it has launched its first online undergraduate degree on Coursera. BSC in Data Science (Honors) is designed to provide learners around the world with the technical, analytical and mathematical skills needed to succeed in today’s data-driven economy.
This degree has a flexible full-time study option designed to explore aspiring data analysts and data analysts among employees who already want to formalize or expand their skills. Delivered online by Huddersfield’s award-winning faculty, the program combines applied mathematics, statistical theory and real-world technical skills with cutting-edge tools including Python, SQL and AI model development.
The launch is amid a huge global demand for data expertise. According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Job Report, the role of big data experts is expected to be the fastest growing category of jobs between 2025 and 2030, which is largely driven by the rapid development and adoption of artificial intelligence. The degree prepares students to enter directly into these high-growth areas and is equipped with the theoretical basis and practical experience the employer seeks.
To meet the mandate of both institutions, aiming to expand access to high-quality education, BSC Data Science provides performance-based admissions. Applicants who do not have traditional qualifications but demonstrate competence through prior experience or independent research can earn admission by successfully completing the first 60 credits of the program.
“There has never been a demand for skilled data professionals and we are proud to work with the University of Huddersfield to meet this need,” said Marni Baker Stein, Chief Content Officer of Coursera. “This new online bachelor’s degree prepares learners with the critical data science that critical data science and AI skills employers are looking for. With flexible learning options and performance-based admissions pathways, learners can gain ready skills without putting their lives or careers on hold.”
The University of Huddersfield was recently ranked by QS World as the most progressive university in the UK in 2025 and is now ranked in the top 50 in the UK. This recognition reflects its ongoing investment in teaching excellence, research and student success on campus and online.
“Extending our online offer to undergraduates by introducing our first online-only bachelor’s degree is an important step in Huddersfield’s distance learning,” said Sean Pryor, head of distance learning at Huddersfield University. “We continue to understand the need for flexible learning methods, and all our customized distance learning courses have this in mind, allowing students to work to some extent while balancing other commitments and overcoming obstacles. I’m particularly pleased that we continue to work with Coursera as we have an ongoing shared vision to deliver high-quality online learning.”
Coursera continues to expand its degree portfolio, which includes 50 degrees from 29 of the world’s best universities, currently serving more than 26,000 students. Coursera has over 170 million registered learners worldwide, of which about 4.5 million are located in the UK.
Potential students can now register interest on the first cohort starting in October 2025 and will be open in May. Learn more:
