EP 1161 Jeff Altman, the big game hunter prepares you to answer this tricky question.

Executives who have interviewed errors make too much (and how to correct them)

I want to prepare you for one of a tough interview questions. Ready?

“So, how many are you looking for?”

Now, if you try to answer this question for them without any thought, you will shoot yourself ahead of time. That’s because people have to shoot high or too low trends. This is just human nature. Suddenly, sweating starts to fall on your forehead and they are looking for it. . . It reminds me of my first time eating when I was 20 (if you didn’t notice, I’m no longer 20). In the morning, I was in a restaurant in New York where people were there and they were listening to the Africans were ordering and gambling ways so we could bring them sweat.

So the HR staff or hiring manager is asking this question and want to sweat when answering because they know the right answer because that’s something on their budget and you don’t. Therefore, this is one of the unfair questions. So, this is what I want to do.

Before you get an interview, you have to do some research on your market value. Recognize that many of the content posted online are unique and suitable for the perfect individual. What you know is that people working for prestige companies in your market area, or in urban areas, and you are in Seo City, Iowa, have no way to pay the same amount of money they pay someone in the Bay Area.

So, recognizing these salary differences, but still doing some homework. You will start to notice some patterns in ads, that is, you do salary research on certain online sites and may notice when talking to friends.

Therefore, No. 1, do your homework.

No. 2, determine a basic number. What I call “basic salary for rocks” does not include the bonus that can be accepted by employees who join the company. Then, from there, start looking at the lowest acceptable numbers for the work you are doing in your market area. Then, you want to identify the person who really makes you happy.

So, 3 different numbers sets – what really makes you happy is the top 1; the bottom is what I call the Rock Basic Salary, which does not include the bonus of joining the company staff and still paying the bill, and there is a middle number that is the least acceptable number in your market area.

So the next thing to do is throw away the bottom number, rock base salary, get rid of it, and put it in your hip pocket just in case. However, for the purposes of this conversation, you provide the middle number, then the highest number, and keep it quiet at this time. The game plan is for you to listen to them.

“It seems to be a lot. Can you be a little flexible?”

“It depends on what I hear from here. Obviously, if this is a job that doesn’t fit my needs, I’m not flexible at all. You don’t want to hire me.

Just leave it there. Don’t negotiate with yourself in the room. Just say, “Let’s use this range now.”
