Nintendo adds new parent controls for GameChat for Switch 2

The gaming giant is also improving controls from its parents as Nintendo launches its new Switch 2.

The brand new gamechat by the console is necessary, a social feature that Switch 2 users will be coming soon, a social feature that allows players to communicate directly using voice or video chat and share the screen while playing, which will gain more control over in-game communication. For accounts under 16, parents or guardians can approve and monitor pre-selected friends lists, report edges, and will be added to Nintendo’s existing parental control app, now compatible with Switch 2.

Under the new controls, if the player wants to start a video chat, the parents must grant permission even if they start a video chat with a pre-approved friend. In addition to controlling the list of friends, parents can use the app to monitor GameChat history, including what they are playing, who they play with, and what the camera displays in their field of view during chat. Nintendo will also offer new customization options for parents and guardians who want to add notes to their children’s contacts.

Existing apps have allowed supervisor accounts to monitor screen time, monitor playback history, and approve games and content for younger players.

Throughout the industry, child advocates and parents alerted the dangers of unsurveilled voice and text chats, especially in popular open-world gaming environments such as Roblox and Meta Horizons. In response to a series of reports on misconduct, predation and clear content, Roblox weakened its social traits and enhanced its parents’ control. After limiting social features for users under 13, Meta turned on access to a set of age-appropriate worlds, as well as overhauls of control over its virtual reality parents and game ratings.

Unlike the first version of the console, Nintendo’s Switch 2 no longer allows players to post screenshots directly to social media. GameChat will be available to all players for free until March 31, 2026, after which Nintendo online subscribers will only have access to features in the game.
