Yes, the MacBook Air M4 (9/10, wired recommendation) is the top pick in our best laptops and best MacBook guides. But this is also the laptop I found myself recommending to friends and family. No other laptop under $1,000 combines this super fast performance with a balance of battery life for a day, all in the thinnest chassis in the game. It even comes with 16 GB of RAM, although you might want to jump to 512 GB of storage. Even if there are a lot of Apple charges that increase storage fees, it’s worth it given the current cheap price.

When I first reviewed the Surface Laptop 13.8-inch (also known as Surface Laptop Edition 7) (7/10, wired recommendation), it immediately became my everyday driver. My favorite laptop feature is the monitor. It’s sharp and fast (with a 120 Hz refresh rate), but it’s actually a 3:2 aspect ratio display that really makes it unique. It’s a taller screen and I like being able to see more works vertically. Not only that, in the latest version, it finally gets great performance and battery life thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Pro (even better, elite) chip. There is also an updated, more affordable model (confusingly called the Surface Laptop 13), but I don’t like much of my favorite features for the 13.8-inch model. For its value, you can also buy the basic configuration for $870.

If you are going to Prime Day and looking for cheap dirt, then I can serve you. Yes, this device is a Chromebook, but as a “Chromebook Plus” model, it’s a big step compared to the reputation these laptops have gained when they were introduced to them in school. The Acer Chromebook Plus 515 comes with a 1080p display, a spacious 15.6-inch display and an Intel Core i3 processor. The screen is not a touch screen, but the port selection is good and the speakers are good. As far as the price is concerned, this is a very powerful machine if your demand is not high.

Don’t buy a Windows laptop for under $300. It’s just sadness. If you need an ultra-cheap laptop, a Chromebook is a must. Acer’s Chromebook CX15 is your best laptop for $300. Grab the version with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of memory. The 1080p, 15-inch screen doesn’t have excellent color accuracy, but the 300 columns of brightness are pretty good. Similarly, Intel Celeron CPUs are not speed demons, but can browse the network and light documents to work. Walmart also has sales in a 4 GB configuration, which is only $159.

I usually don’t recommend using a laptop that is nearly five years old. Rarely enough discounts to guarantee compromise. But for this year’s Golden Day, Walmart cuts the price of the M1 MacBook Air to $599. Of course, you can still buy a refurbished model for less, but the Walmart discount is as cheap as the new MacBook discount, and $250 less than the current discount on the latest M4 MacBook Air. While I recommend most people to buy newer models, I won’t be upset with you because I want to save some money, and for the right person, the M1 MacBook Air will make you very happy and last for many years.

If you have to sit on your desk every day, it’s beautiful. Branch is already known for this brand – it makes our favorite office chair – but this laptop stand does look really nice. The combination of walnut-colored wood and clean, simple aesthetics is enough to add interest to what was originally a pretty basic perimeter. There are no better laptops out there.

The Logitech G Pro X TKL is the best keyboard you can buy, and there is good reason. The haptic switch (also known as linear switch) feels sweet and I find the TKL (missing digital pad) layout is ideal for gaming and never gets in the way of my mouse hand, but doesn’t make non-game inconvenience. While usually a bit expensive, this selling price is absolutely essential if you are looking for a gaming keyboard.

Is Prime Day a good time to buy a laptop?
Yes, yes. I’ve seen some laptop transactions pop up, and other times it doesn’t work. For example, at the start of this week, my favorite cheap laptop, the Vivobook 14 (Snapdragon X), is priced at just $550, which is $200 for the original price, and the previous lowest price discount of $100. One day later, it was sold out. This is a thing of the big sales event like Prime Day.
Meanwhile, there are discounts for truly popular laptops such as the M4 MacBook Air. While this is not the first time we have seen it for $850, it’s still a lot. I’m very careless not to mention it because this is the laptop that I think most people should buy.
What should I look for in my laptop?
There are many things to consider. We run the whole thought process of how to choose a laptop guide, but you want to start with which laptop you need. Gaming laptops require discrete GPUs and quick refresh rate displays. Content creation devices require fast CPU and GPU, lots of RAM and color-accurate screens. If it’s your primary work computer, you may need a larger 16-inch screen or the ability to connect to a large number of external monitors.
However, most people only need a reliable computer with a longer battery life, the ports required, and a display that is not distracting. That’s why we recommend laptops like the M4 MacBook Air, Surface Laptop (7th Edition) and the Asus Zenbook S 14 OLED. They boot 16 GB of RAM for you, have a high-end display, and have a highly portable form. They also provide the high-end build quality and battery life required without the extra performance you pay for that you won’t use.
However, you may be looking for something cheap, and this is where Chromebooks come into play. If you want to spend less than $500, you can get a Chromebook than a budget window laptop. They have limitations, but usually get better performance from the hardware.
