The latest work by Maine-based painter Jay Stern (previously appeared here). Born in Columbus, Ohio, Stern received her PhD in Painting from the University of Cincinnati and an MFA in Art Leadership at Seattle University. His painting aims to mythize the present. By emphasizing the relationship between internal and external, domestic and public, Stern considers the dynamics of interstitial spaces and the dynamics of the systems that dominate them. The result is that visual language changes the ordinary, constructing a new world from the wreckage of previous lives that can examine and collapse a person’s version of himself. In this way, the seemingly Quotidian moments will dissolve in the metaphor, revealing that the psychological level has not been revealed yet. Although there are no characters, Stern’s work is a portrait of his personal life.
