American Express® Commercial Gold Card is an excellent choice for business owners who want to maximize their revenue with one card. The card has high bonus categories that automatically reflect the highest spending area for each billing cycle and earn transferable membership reward points. Card rating*: ⭐⭐⭐1/2

American Express Business Gold Cards offer valuable benefits and business-friendly bonus categories. However, it also has an annual fee of $375 (see rates and fees).

Amex Business Gold Card Welcome Discount

TPG’s valuation PEG membership reward points for May 2025 are 2 cents, making this bonus worth $2,000.

This offer is better than the conventions offered by the card and is closer to the best offer we have seen.

With Amex Business Gold, you won’t get luxury items like Airport Lounge Access, but the card has some valuable privileges.

Declare credits

The most important Amex Business Gold Beneast is the annual statement credit it offers up to $395, which includes:

  • Flexible business statement credits up to $240 per calendar year ($20 per month)* on qualified purchases on FedEx, Grubhub and Office Supply stores*
  • Walmart + Stated credit for up to $155 per month (up to $12.95 per month, plus an applicable tax on a membership fee; but automatically renewed, as well as a non-qualified UPS)*

If you can maximize these credits, you will be able to make up for the annual fee of your card with this benefit alone.

Business interests

Amex Business Gold also offers several great tools to help you manage your business expenses. You can get 99 employee cards (the first five $95 year fee and then pay a $95 annual fee on the first five cards; see rates and fees) and earn points on their purchases.

You can also easily designate employees as Account Managers, allowing others other than the primary account holder to review transactions, add new employees, and pay.

Cardholders also have access to hotel collections, which include two nights or more accommodation and valuable Amex offers, including $100 in-commerce credit.

Again, you can find more travel and business benefits on other cards, but the statement credit, business benefits and protection that comes with Amex Business Gold makes it a perfect fit for many businesses.

And, if you like aesthetics, you can choose the rose gold color of the metal card instead of the standard gold.

Win points on Amex Business Gold

One of the unique features of Amex Business Gold is that your bonus category can change each billing cycle to match your spending pattern. You will automatically earn 4 points per dollar spent in each billing cycle, meaning you don’t have to choose a category and commit to it.

If your spending habits fluctuate month by month, AMEX will help you get the most bonus points. Qualified categories are:

  • Monthly wireless telephone service fees are directly made by wireless telephone service providers in the United States
  • Purchase ads in certain media (online, television, radio) in US media providers
  • Transport purchases including trains, taxis, rides, ferries, tolls, parking, buses and subways
  • Purchases from electronic merchandise retailers and software and cloud system providers in the United States
  • Buy at a gas station in the United States
  • Buy in restaurants in the United States, including takeout and delivery

Based on TPG’s May 2025 membership bonus points valuation, your 4-point tax rate equals 8% of the gains, and each bonus category (and then 1-point per dollar) charges $150,000 per calendar year.

Apart from these bonus categories, you will earn 3 points per dollar on flights, prepaid hotels as well as prepaid flights and hotel packages booked through Amex Travel or Amextravel.com, and 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases.

If you spend up to $150,000 per year, you will receive 600,000 membership reward points, and TPG’s May 2025 valuation is $12,000. This huge revenue potential alone may be enough to encourage businesses to choose this card.

Redemption Points on Amex Commercial Gold

The Amex Business Gold card earns membership reward points that you can transfer to any of Amex’s airline and hotel partners.

You can also book a trip through Amex Travel, cash out their points credit or gift card to redeem points, or use them to pay directly at Amazon or membership rewards online shopping malls. However, these options have values ​​of 0.5-1 cents per point, so we recommend sticking with transferring your points to get the maximum from them.

Transfer points on Amex Business Gold

Similarly, the most valuable redemption option you earn on Amex Business Gold is to transfer it to Amex’s hotel and airline partners, including Air France-klm Flying Blue, Iberia Plus and Marriott Bonvoy.

TPG Senior Points and Myers writer Ben Smithson loves transferring his Amex points to Air Canada’s Aeroplan program, which offers a wide variety of airline redemption partners with wise fixed reward rates. He also likes to transfer to British Airways Club to book short-haul flights from the UK to other European destinations on British Airways at a speed of 5,000 points per way.

Which cards compete with Amex Business Gold?

If you want more stating points or have difficulty proving the annual fee of AMEX Business Gold, you may get more value from one of the cards:

If you can maximize the bonus reward category and the stated credit it provides, Amex Business Gold is a great choice for your small business. The bonus category that adapts to your spending and other business benefits makes this card a compelling card for many business owners.

However, if you are looking for more business benefits or need to keep your annual fees low, you may find that in fact, this card won’t win gold for your wallet.
