Joseph Renda Jr.

In the paintings of Joseph Renda Jr., trompe-l’-il windows, arches and blue sky meet in a surreal setting. His René Magritte-style canvas celebrates nature, sometimes full of humorous eccentricity, to encourage appreciation for the interconnectedness of everything. Instead of focusing on the subconscious as 20th-century surrealists, Renda emphasizes elements of its surroundings – birds, gardens, flowers and vast landscapes, but still has rich symbolism.

For example, birds traditionally represent freedom, optimism, and connection to the spiritual world. Plants, storms, tools and countless other patterns have their own inherent meanings, from the concept of growth and transformation to balance and justice. Located within windows and arches, we are invited to participate in an esoteric world (but not completely enter). And the blue sky sometimes breaks to reveal that it might actually be a facade, not something we can see.

Renda’s nearest stone arch is included in a three-person show in the vertical gallery Beautiful route With Jerome Tiunayan and Laura Catherwood. The exhibition will last until September 27 in Chicago. Find more information on Renda’s website and on Instagram.
