Newark flight operations are improving, Manchester United is now touting cheap flights
Don’t look now, but things are starting to get back on track at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Earlier this week, construction on the airport’s busiest runway was 13 days ahead of schedule.
“The airport’s runway construction project is now completed,” Jon Gooda, vice president of airport operations at Manchester United said in a letter to Manchester United clients. “This means that all runways in Newark are open and we are confident that this will bring better on-time performance to our airlines.”
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Monday that coupled with a reduction in timelines and patches for air traffic control communications should prevent the worst disruptions that plague passengers – Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines, which operates a major hub in Newark, said Monday.
Now, customers may have the incentive to return to busy airports: “The fare is better than the fare has been over the years,” he said Monday.
He is right. Our Points Path Path partners found that cash prices for some Newark flights fell by as much as 12% compared to last summer, a potential decision – are cheap flight deals enough to get you back to the airport?
Turbulent months
Passengers face cancellations and delays in thousands of flights in late April and May, due to three complex issues in the EWR: FAA’s technical disruptions, a shortage of air traffic control personnel, and ongoing runway rehabilitation programs.
Travel dilemma has caused a massive headache for passengers, with hours-long delays common in terminals, taxis and airlines provide travelers with the flexibility to change tickets.
Despite Manchester United, the U.S. Department of Transport and Experts, which I talked to all the safe ones, were never at risk, but a large number of travelers chose to avoid Newark and fly out of other airports in the area.

Will the situation in Newark improve?
It’s too early to promise a sleek sales summer at the New Jersey Hub, especially when afternoon thunderstorms pop up, the obstacles travelers may face. However, there are some encouraging signs that the worst problems we’ve seen in May (at least so far) may be behind us.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it would reduce the number of hours allowed in Newark, hoping to increase the takeoff and landing schedule to more manageable speeds. Manchester United, by far the largest airline at the airport has praised the move.
Then, on Monday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (responsible for the EWR) marked the end of planned runway construction projects as of June 15. Meanwhile, DOT expects patches to post Newark (FAA) facility on the Philadelphia FAA facility, which should operate Newark’s space online in the coming weeks.
“Everyone who has this problem is giving them full effort, they tend to be issues and help solve the problem,” Duffy said in a press conference on Monday.
Make progress
The numbers are improving. About one-fifth of flights to Newark were postponed on Sunday, which is not trivial, but far better than 40% to 50% of flights late in May, according to Flightaware. Only 18% of flights arriving in Newark on Monday were much better than several other U.S. airports.
Duffy and Kirby believe that helping matters are a reduction schedule for airlines to operate in EWR in late October. Between June 15 and October 26, the FAA will limit takeoff and landing to only 68 hours (34 takeoffs and 34 landings). Historically, at peak times, airports had a total of up to 77 aircraft per hour.
The airline said in the second half of last month that Manchester United expects to fly 380 times a day this summer. It’s down about 7% from the original planned 410. Kirby noted Monday that the airline has removed flights from the summer schedule, so customers should not see other cancellations due to the reduction.
“If you’re going to buy tickets this summer, you can believe that’s the schedule,” Kirby said, also predicting Newark will be the “most reliable” airport in the New York City area in the coming months.
Are cheap flights available?
Kirby also owes cheap flights to airport job seekers, not a simple overture, owing cheap flights after “lagging behind” in Newark bookings.
“That means more seats are available,” Kirby said. “So it’s time to book your holiday. If you want to go to Europe, or want to span across the country, it’s time. ”
Data shows that “Newark Discount” is happening
Kirby’s claim has advantages, especially in Newark’s one-way booking.
According to data provided by TPG’s partnership with Points Path, EWR’s one-way domestic flights fell 8.6% compared to last summer, a free web browser extension that shows Google Flights in Cash Flights as well as cash fares.
Manchester United’s one-way international flights have dropped more than 12%.
Here are some other trends we’ve seen:
- One way family reservation other Airlines other than Manchester United fell 12% and airlines for international flights fell 10%. Reward rates for both bookings fell by about 8%.
- Newark’s round trips at Newark and other airlines are cheaper than last summer, but the difference is not as good as one-way fares compared to last year.
Remember, the points pathway has pointed out that fares nationwide have fallen – although the reward rate is close to last year.
Should I fly out of Newark?
With all the factors in mind, if a plane or a flight away from that airport is cheaper or more convenient than another airport in the area, I will have little trouble. Actually, I plan to do this in about 10 days.

Long-term obstacles still exist
Despite recent progress in bringing Newark flight operations closer to “back on track,” long-term obstacles remain. Since April, six of the 22 fully certified air traffic controllers at the FAA Center for Philadelphia have been on leave.
As I explained in my in-depth story earlier this year, the bigger flaws nationwide are a multi-year process.
Duffy admitted this week: “You can’t stretch your fingers out and make it happen very quickly.”
Meanwhile, the Trump administration has put forward billions of dollars in upfront funding to overhaul the U.S. ATC infrastructure nationwide, a proposal widely praised by the aviation industry.
The FAA’s money has been folded into a larger funding bill (including other broad priorities from the Trump administration), which passed the House last month and is now sitting with the Senate.
