A respected man/woman – build your own brand to stand out

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter
An article in Brainz magazine reminded me of an old song that many of you can relate to.
Why did you stay in that job?
I was reading an article in Brainz Magazine, BRAINZ Magazine, where a coach was talking about her own struggles with coaching and starting her career as a coach. She hired a coach to support her. The coach said, and I’m just going to read the exact words, “If you hide, no one will find you.” It reminds me of an old song by The Kinks, you can look it up. This is what is called a respectable person. It talks about a very regular man. He goes to work at nine o’clock and comes home at five thirty. Take the same train every time. He is very ordinary. He is ambitious and perverted. And he’s very ordinary. Frankly, he was boring.
The thing I want to say to most of you is, I don’t want to say you are boring, but you are ordinary. You are professionally average. There is almost nothing that can make you stand out from others. We live in a culture where the ability to stand out is important, both professionally and personally.
I’m not suggesting you become a Kardashian. We don’t talk about that kind of salient stuff. But how do you become known and respected for what you do and who you are? If you think he can do that by going to work at 9, getting home at 5:30, and sitting in front of the TV, I think you’re wrong.
So your professional goal, and probably your personal goal as well, is to get involved and do something that lets others know about you. Because otherwise you’re living this sleepy life, this sleepy career, being so conservative about doing the best thing as a respectable person (it’s not about your political conservativeness. It’s about you and your life and whether you’re willing to get out of your own way and be in front of people.
Now some people are like, “Ah, what is she doing? What is he doing,” because this is their life and they want to keep you in the same box that they’ve always known you were in.
I’m not saying it’s easy, but taking small steps to let people know about you will make a difference over time. For example, you can find podcasters who produce shows related to what you want to be famous for, and you can be interviewed. You can write and publish on LinkedIn, and share what you write with others. You can make videos on YouTube, Facebook, anywhere and become famous for your expertise. Then people start looking and start finding you.
Small videos, small articles, shared articles, done over time, can allow you to be seen as different from the respected man or woman in the song. So get out there and start building your reputation based on your knowledge and who you are. I’m not talking about what’s going on within your own company. This is a good starting point. You should be known there. But outside of your company, outside of the world around you, and in other social circles that you’re involved in, so that people know, like, trust and respect you, and that you’re top of mind when we consider someone for a position.
