Today, Apple announced The latest version of its Mac operating system, Macos Tahoe, has a few new features and applications. However, the update will also mark the final substantive version of MACO that will be supported on Intel-based Macs.
The final Intel-based Macs that will receive MacOS Tahoe’s ultimate support include the following models: MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, four Thunderbolt 3 ports), IMAC (27-inch, 2020), and Mac Pro (2019). This means that if you have one of these Macs, you will still have access to all the features in the update when the Macos Tahoe launches later this fall. The only exception is that anything that depends on Apple Intelligence is not available, as these features are limited to Apple Silicon machines.
It has been five years since the transition from Intel to Apple Silicon. At the time, Apple said it would “continue to support and release new versions of MACOS for Intel Macs for Intel Macs in the next few years.” Intel-based MAC has stopped receiving software updates over 2019, and it’s time for the last-generation model to be removed from the list.
Fortunately, Apple will provide security upgrades to these Intel-based Macs for another three years. This is very solid for machines that have been around for over five years.
I recommend you buyers who have purchased Intel-based Macs over the years. The jump from Intel Mac to the original M1 Mac is a huge leap in terms of performance and battery life, although I’m sure the super fixed price of Intel Macs will attract some in recent years. Now, we’re sure where the end of the road is, and hopefully some people will buy at least the M1 MacBook Air.
Apple will also end the company’s emulation layer Rosetta for running non-native applications on Apple Silicon. This is the key to Apple’s success in transitioning to its own bargaining chips. For any other product other than old games, Apple offers software only available via MacOS 26 and MacOS 27. More than anything else, this is another way Apple encourages developers to complete the transition to run their apps locally on Apple Silicon.
