Apple is pushing AI to more products, but still lacks state-of-the-art models

apple On Monday, integrating AI into devices such as iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch continues to carry out a slow and steady approach, and many new features and upgrades were announced at WWDC. The company also premiered the Basic Model Framework, a way for developers to write code that attacks Apple’s AI models.
There is real-time translation in the buzz AI announcement at the event, which converts phone and FaceTime calls from one language to another in real time. Apple also showed off the Workout Partner, an AI-powered voice assistant designed to provide encouragement and useful updates during the workout. “This is your second run of the week,” the exercise partner told a jogging woman in the demo video. “You’re crushing it.”
Apple has also announced an upgrade to visual intelligence, which uses AI to explain the world through the device’s camera. The new version can also view screenshots to perform things like identifying products or summarizing web pages. Apple showed off upgrading to Genmoji and Image Playground, two tools that use AI to generate stylized images. It shows how to use AI to automate tasks, generate text, summarize emails, edit photos, and find video clips.
The incremental announcement did not eliminate Apple’s idea of catching up on AI. The company has no model that can compete with the best products of OpenAI, Meta or Google, and can still hand over some challenging queries to Chatgpt.
Some analysts believe it is necessary to adopt Apple’s incremental approach to AI development.
“The jury is still using whether users are attracting specific phones,” said Paolo Pescatore, an analyst at PP Foresight. “Apple needs to achieve a good balance of bringing something new without thwarting its loyal user core base.” “It boils down to the bottom line, and whether AI is driving any revenue gains.”
Francisco Jeronimo, an analyst at IDC, said it is important for Apple to access its AI model as developers because the company has a wide range of coding personnel. “It brings Apple closer to competitors like OpenAI, Google and Meta have been providing AI tools for some time,” Jeronimo said in a statement.
While not the most capable, Apple’s AI models run on personal devices, meaning they don’t have network connections without network connections and do not incur the expense of accessing OpenAI and others’ models. The company also touts a way for developers to use cloud models that can ensure private data security through so-called private cloud computing.
But Apple may need to make a bigger leap by using AI in the future, as its competitors are exploring how technology can reshape personal computing.
Both Google and Openai showcase futuristic AI helpers who can talk in real time and see the world through the device’s camera. Last month, Openai announced it would acquire a company founded by legendary Apple designer Jony Ive to develop new AI-injected hardware.
