Jeff Altman, Hunter, discusses another technique that goes beyond the gatekeeper.
Unemployment, not out of control: structure = momentum
This is part 2 of my series to work with the gatekeeper. Note that I say, “Work with the gatekeeper” because it is implied in “Going Over the Gatekeeper.” Attitude is a confrontational relationship. They have what you want, i.e. access, and it is not easy to give it to you.
The truth is, why? The first thing to change your attitude is to understand that they are not your opponent. They can be your ally. If you are dealing with gatekeepers, if you are dealing with people there to protect the people behind them from the lunatics who sometimes steal there, their time, you will understand the point of view they are in.
So I just want you to deal with them like they are friends, you talk to them, not with anger, hostility or “attitude”, but with them, just like they are royals.
That’s because, at the end of the day, they’re the only thing that saves them from nuts for the person behind them. I have to describe them as Nutjobs, because I got these calls, so I know, what’s there.
Therefore, respect them. have fun. A smile appeared on your face as you talk to them. You will find that you often get calls back and when pushing pushes, that’s what you want – there’s a chance to get through.
I remember being a junior recruiter, one of whom was one of the big New York banks and no one in my office could get in touch with the hiring manager. No one in my office can get through HR, I used to be. Part of it is durability. Part of the reason is that I am friendly with the people who are receiving the message.
Try being friendly instead of tricky.
Recruiters know you don’t know: They’re not watching all these screening videos
