Silver Airlines ends all flights, travelers receive refunds when operators close

Silver Airways, a regional airline for Florida and Caribbean destinations, closed its doors Wednesday morning.
In a notice posted to its website and social media channels, the airline informed travelers that it would “stop operations” on Wednesday. All persons who make reservations using a credit card shall return it through the card issuer or travel agency.
Silver’s suspension comes nearly six months after the December filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The airline hopes to cut debt and raise new capital through a court-led restructuring.
These hopes end on Wednesday.
“In order to reorganize and go bankrupt, Silver conducted a deal to sell its assets to another airline holding company, which unfortunately decided not to continue Silver’s flight operations,” the carrier said.
According to Aviation Data Cirium’s schedule data, Silver flies about 16 destinations in Florida every day, the Bahamas and the Caribbean, mainly from Fort Lauderdale-Gollywood International Airport (FLL) and Bases at Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Travelers affected by silver suspension can turn to American Airlines: it flies from Miami International Airport (MIA) to most destinations in Fort Lauderdale, which are from Fort Lauderdale.
Cape Air, Frontier Airlines and JetBlue have flights on most bank routes in San Juan.
Avianca, Azul, Copa Airlines, JetBlue and United Airlines all put their codes in selected flights in Florida and the Caribbean. Members of JetBlue’s TrueBlue and Uniter’s MileagePlus loyalty program can earn points on Silver Flights.

“We know this is a frustrating situation for affected customers,” a JetBlue spokesman said, adding that the airline did not inform Silver of its suspension in advance. “We are working to support people with codeshare and interwoven itineraries by offering alternative travel plans or refunds.”
