Pipeted like cake icing, Ebony Russell’s sweet ship evokes emotional celebrations – Huge

Ebony Russell uses bakery tools to blow clay into the clay, creating a series of delicious containers in the prism of color.
Russell’s practice is built on the relationship between form and function and the vessel itself as a container of memory and gestures. “I’m interested in how material carries emotions and presence,” she said. “A lot of the things I do start with personal experience, but I hope it opens up space for others as well.”
The Australian artist was interested in the aesthetics and process of cakes, initially focusing on sculptural patterns such as brides and Pennsylvania top hats, but the icing on the cake itself has gradually become the focus. “I was looking for a way to build with clay that feels smoother and more intuitive,” she told Huge. “When I started using pipe bags, I liked immediacy and texture – it felt like painting in space.”
Some of the works shown here are included in Russell’s current solo exhibition frivolous, Martin Browne contemporary in Sydney, lasts until June 21. Find more information on the artist’s website and on Instagram. (pass Frying pan)
