Three ancient tombs specifically targeting Egyptian politicians were found in a funeral complex in Luxor.
A team of Egyptian archaeologists made the discovery in Dra’abu El Naga, an important non-royal cemetery on the west bank of the Nile, announced on Monday.
Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy called the tomb three a “important” addition to the country’s archaeological record, as CNN’s first reported. Mohamed Ismail Khaled, secretary general of Egypt’s Supreme Antiquities Commission, added in a statement that the excavation team was able to identify the names and titles of its occupants due to the well-preserved inscriptions in the grave.
Khalid said the inscriptions inside the grave allowed the excavation team to recognize the name and title of its owner. One of the tombs was reportedly owned by a man named Amun-Em-Ipet, from the La Messide period, or 19 (usually classified as the 19th century and 20th dynasty). He was employed by the temple of the Amun manor, one of the main gods of the ancient Egyptian pantheon, and in later iterations he was perhaps the most famous Amun-Ra (Amun and the Sun God, RA).
Another grave holds a man named Bucky, who served as the granary supervisor in the 18th Dynasty, while the third grave is dedicated to a man named ES, who has held multiple roles: the Superintendent of the Temple of Amon, mayor of North Os. In the grave of ES, the team found a small courtyard with a well connected to the lobby of the Long Hall and a second incomplete lobby. Bucky’s grave is more luxurious, with two courtyards in it – but landed on the resting place of Amun-Em-Ipet, which includes a small courtyard and a square hall covered with a niche, whose western wall is damaged.
According to the Ministry’s statement, further cleaning and research on inscriptions and burial axes are being prepared for academic publications. In the same article, Khalid pointed out that this discovery “is a promotion.” [Egypt’s] Location on the Global Cultural Tourism Map. ”
