Yvette Mayorga (formerly) known for her delicious, fragile, occasionally ominous acrylic paintings, nodded (formerly) to her mother’s memories and referenced baroque and rococo art while rigorously studying the concepts of family, community, community and prosperity.
Mohoche Gallery said Mayorga’s work “led with pink shades to critically examine the American Dream and Latino experiences, often borrowing works from personal and family photos and art history.”
pu $ h travelThe artist’s first show in the gallery and his first performance in Chicago’s hometown since 2018, took a semi-autobiographical approach by reflecting on her experiences in the city over the past decade. In addition to her special candy-inspired works, she has created large-scale works that include objects such as lampshades, clothing and jewelry, as well as a piece of ceramic, pastel, gold foil, acrylic nails, and more.
Many of these works draw on Mayorga’s personal memories, such as snapshots of artists who were kids at birthday parties or sitting in the living room of their family. The artist incorporates romantic Rococo aesthetics and styles, such as portraits modeled by Elizabeth Vigee Le Brun or Jean-Honoré Fragonard, introducing the overall omissions of the Euro-centric narrative of art history and its other identities. Mayorga even coined a term to describe her method “Latinxoco”, which merges Latin identity with Rococo Aesthetics.
“Pink is a color with a long history with Mayorga practices, deployed as a conceptual strategy that can undermine the Western skin tone ideals, raise issues of race, class and gender embodied, while also taking cosmetics and family aesthetics (an ironic and radical soft reclamation efficiency) as an advantage,” the gallery said.
