Lorde described her as her “most proudest” track on her new album Man of Year of Year of Younth, a difficult ballad about the path to self-acceptance. In the accompanying video, the singer took off her T-shirt and tied her breasts with tape. The 28-year-old New Zealander told Australian radio show Triple J that the title of the track was inspired by participating GQThe Person of the Year event in 2023 and having experienced her idea of gender expression “It was amazing to me in this way and it really scary and exciting.”
Tapes become a means of liberation as she jumps, crawls and creeps in crazy modern dances. After the video was released, social media users quickly pointed to the visual similarities to Walter de Maria’s installation New York Earth Roomcurrently managed by DIA Art Foundation.
The work debuted in 1977 at the Heiner Friedrich Gallery near Houston Street in Manhattan, which included iterations of the powdered earth fields. There is no sign of where to go, just galleries, a mixture of dirt and bark, and microorganisms filled with its temporary ecosystem. (This work reportedly grew edible mushrooms, although it can be purchased briefly.)
Heiner Friedrich, the gallery’s founder, helped establish the Dia Art Foundation. New York Earth Room It was presented to the public as a permanent device in SOHO in 1980. According to the Foundation’s website, early DIA teams expanded Earth Roomincrease its total weight to 280,000 pounds and increase its depth to about two feet.
In the current iteration you can’t actually step on the dirt, and in fact, Lorde videos were not shot in the de Maria installation, but just a homage to it.
Lorde said on her website that with her new song, she “trying to make it sound like a Fontana, like a painting bitten by a man, like a New York Earth Room. My Rebirth Voice.”
