Jeff Altman, Hunter, explains why it’s important to be busy in job searches, especially if you’ve been out of work for a long time.
Career Agility: Success Strategy
Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter, I was a career recruiter from 1972 – a million years ago. There have been a lot of things happening in the world since then, but a few things really haven’t changed. For those who have been out of work since last year, I simply put it, these are especially important to you and you will understand why in a second. But the first thing I want to say is that the longer you lose your job, the harder it is to find a job. Of course, the less leverage you have in salary negotiations. After all, you might receive an offer, but the employer basically says, “I’m not negotiating with this guy. He’s been out of work for nearly a year. You know, he accepted it, or he took it out of the office. I don’t have a negotiating room.” So the longer you’re out of your job, the harder it is.
Now, if you’re not in the year, I’m just simply saying, hustle. Because when you reach a year’s mark, you start to realize that people are not calling you. The recruiter has stopped calling you. The company has stopped calling you. Your real best option is to go through the network, just like it did in the beginning. But the reason recruiters don’t make calls is because the company doesn’t want to pay $20, $30, $50,000 for referrals to people who have lost their jobs for a year. I can’t blame them. The reason companies stop calling is because their attitude is: “This person has lost his job for so long?” Now, you may start blaming the recession, but they don’t care. You know, they started thinking, “In that time, many people like this guy were able to go to work, what happened to them?” So the longer you quit work, the less likely you are to go to work. And if you get into a year’s grade, it’s really a threshold and things really start gliding for people. I’m just checking notes here.
Increase your chances of responding to your application
Well, yes, so when it’s all said, hustle, as noisy as your hair is on fire. No hair. Well, you know, put all your efforts into things. And you might think you are searching hard, but kick a level. You know, push yourself, especially if you are on a year’s mark because your career is at risk. Of course, if you get a job offer, it is unlikely to be the same level as before, because the company doesn’t have to pay. If you get an offer, it is usually lower within the company than the previous ones. Why? Because you are considered a damaged item. And they won’t pay premium dollars for damaged goods. They want to watch you for a while before giving you the old level. So there is more noise, noisy than the noise in your life, because then everything is dangerous to you and you don’t want to know that it might be more difficult if you wait longer.
