The job market is very tough now – many people are out of work, millions have applied for unemployment benefits, and many companies sometimes put hiring on hold for the rest of 2020. Although many companies are still recruiting, you are competing with past candidates.
While you can definitely hire by applying online if you are well suited for the role and can tailor the app accordingly, you are more likely to get a job through the web.
Even if the company you are interested in currently has no relevant vacancies, it doesn’t mean you can’t connect with a hiring manager or recruiter. You definitely don’t have to apply for an advertising role just, now is a good time to seek an information interview.
Here’s how you can connect with a hiring manager:
- Find the hiring manager on LinkedIn and send them a personalized connection request. You won’t always be able to figure out who that person is, especially in a huge company with multiple teams and stakeholders, but figure it out as much as possible. For example, if you usually report to the Director of Analytics, find a company on LinkedIn that the head of analytics is interested in.
- If you can’t find a hiring manager, try to find out the recruiters related to vacancies or HR, as they usually don’t handle hiring)
- Try to find out what the biggest business pain points of a hiring manager or company are through your online research and Position yourself as someone who can solve that particular problem.
- Send this person thoughtful (and concise!) with your beautiful resume/resume, along with a personal note about yourself and why you are interested in their organization. Always make this message personalized and focus on them, not you first. Don’t send the same message to different organizations, minimal effort won’t bring you the results you want. You need to be able to differentiate yourself.
- Start your information by telling the hiring manager why you are interested in their company and saying something concise to prove that you have finished your research and understand their pain. By reading news, watching industry interviews on YouTube and censoring their social media, conducting research on their websites. That’s all, mentioning the results you provide for your current/former employers to make sure they are relevant to the company you are interested in.
Here is a sample template:

Obviously don’t copy this template as a word, but use a similar structure to create something. No matter how well tailored your message, not everyone will respond to you, but if you send something truly personalized, the chances of getting a response will be greatly increased.
