Father’s Day: Lessons for your job-seeking father (and find your own way)
Today, we celebrate Father’s Day, which is the time to commemorate the men who have shaped our lives. As I pondered the day, the lessons I learned from my father (watched countless others taught) apply directly to the often challenged world of job search.
Think about it. What advice do many fathers give? Usually, it’s about resilience. “Back to your feet,” they would say after they fell. In job search, rejection is part of the process. This is not a reflection of your value, but a sign of perfecting your approach, learning from experience and moving forward. Just as a good father encourages perseverance, you need to develop the same tenacity in your career.
Another common topic is the importance of preparation. Whether it’s carefully planning a family road trip or ensuring you complete your homework, dads often instill the value of ready-to-be. This resonates deeply in job hunting. Are you ready for this interview? Have you done a thorough research on the company? Is your resume laser focused on your target role? There are very few job abilities in parenting or your career.
And, don’t forget to communicate and guide. Fathers often teach us how to express our needs, listen actively and respect others. These are the basic skills for networking, interviewing and building professional relationships. During my years as a recruiter, I saw countless talented people missing out on opportunities simply because they were unable to effectively communicate their value or contact the interviewer.
Now, I also realize that Father’s Day can be a tough day for some people. Not everyone has a positive or supportive relationship with their father. If that’s your experience, I want to say this: You are not defined by this relationship. The quality of flexibility, preparation and effective communication is not only inherited; they can be learned and cultivated independently. Find these qualities in mentors, colleagues and even characters in the wider world. Take control of your own narrative, become your own advocate, and build your own support system. Your career is ultimately your shaping.
As you celebrate or browse the day in your own way this Father’s Day, remember that you have the strength and ability to drive your own success. Embrace the resilience, preparation and communication skills you choose to embody, and intend to apply them. They may just be the key to getting the next huge opportunity.
I wish all the celebrations a happy meaning to the strength and strength of today’s people.

The skills required to find a job are different from the skills required to complete the job. You may be good at your job, but hunting, especially during tough times, is very different from being a good employee.
