“Bring it with you” by artist J. Carino

The story of paradise, disaster and hope for artist J. Carino. Born in Littleton, Colorado, Carino is currently located on the riverfront of California and draws great attraction from the terrain of these two local territories. His work examines the relationship between human beings and the natural world, promoting queer perspectives through peaceful violations and challenges social restrictions, whether people or nature.

In “Bring It With You”, the single tableaux of Carino’s paintings fuses together to create a visually epic: a story that positions queer people as the main actor in the new American mythology. The narrative throughout the series reflects the environmental and political landscape shifts underfoot from pastoral boundaries to scenes of flooding and fire. Carino’s response to current anxiety about climate change and the erosion of legal protections for LGBTQ people, considering what strange people carry around. And, instead of focusing on burden and luggage, Carino embraces the pleasure and possibilities of queer people, encouraging his audience to see that they have everything they need to build a new utopia.
