Spotify lossless may appear soon

Four and a half years in February 2021, Spotify announced a new streaming layer. It’s called Spotify Hifi, and it should deliver high-quality, lossless audio, making Spotify comparable to competitors like Apple Music and Tidal.

But Spotify Hifi is from the future. After several delays and name changes, Spotify gave us…well, there is no quality Spotify Tier (including lossless audio) that is still in progress except for the vague promise.

Well, now that we have some new clues, Spotify is actually working on it. People at Spotify custom application Spicetify (via Verge) have found that “lossless” is mentioned in part of the user interface of the Spotify desktop application. For example, in the settings, losslessness is mentioned as one of the flow quality options, and in the sidebar, there is an option to connect the device.

Additionally, macro analyst Aaron has found a lot of lossless people in the latest iOS Spotify Beta.

In terms of actual quality and format, Spotify mentions the commonly used FLAC format with a quality of “up to 24 bits/44.1 kHz”.

For a starter with lossless audio, check out Mashable’s guide; the short version is, if you have a device that supports it (speakers, headphones), it means it sounds better.

So, does this mean that losslessness is indeed real, actually coming to Spotify? Well, that’s a big tip, but it’s worth remembering that lossless audio was found in Spotify’s app in 2021, and that’s not at all. Hope this time is different.
