Senate members have been quietly reviewing its detailed rules when Republicans in Congress push for what Donald Trump calls the “Great Beauty Act” by July 4. Although some controversial projects (such as the proposed snapshot spending cut) have been removed, the surprising factor remains intact: from the 10-year pause state of conditioning AI.
Congress fights deep pornography with AI-fueled through “knockdown” behavior
Senate Budget Committee Democrats said that the AI moratorium on compliance with special budget rules used by Republicans to advance the bill. If passed, the measure would ban the implementation of a decade of new AI regulations and would punish those by withholding federal broadband funds.
The provision is not over yet – it can still be challenged on the ground of the Senate and can be defeated from the bill with a simple majority vote. Still, it caused a backlash between the two parties. Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene acknowledged she hadn’t read the bill and said she would vote against it if she knew the provision was included.
Mixable light speed
If the spending package passes as is, it will mark a major victory for tech companies eager to avoid a pokemon landscape of state-level AI laws. Without a scanned federal AI framework, states can browse the complex combination of data privacy, copyright and algorithmic governance issues on their own. This pause will effectively freeze these efforts on their tracks.
So far, 47 of the 50 U.S. states have enacted or proposed some form of AI legislation, reflecting a broad, bipartisan focus on unchecked growth in technology. More than 200 state lawmakers from both sides urged Congress to suspend the moratorium, warning that it could cover a wide range of consumer protection laws.
These include regulations aimed at maintaining children’s online security, addressing the harm of generating AI, and overseeing how governments adopt and deploy AI systems.
