Beijing-born New York-born artist Lyn Liu has selected new works, including paintings from her recent solo exhibition “H-Dropping,” along with Kasmin Gallery in Mexico City. Liu studied at New York, Columbia University School of Arts, and at L’écolenational esupérieureuredes Beaux-Arts in Paris. Her film performances address psychological tensions and relationships between individuals, often drawing inspiration from experiences of personal alienation and the reasons she considers our oppressive social reality.
“h-dropping” is an incredible and descriptive exploration of contradictory or non-functional existence states. Her work is inspired by language quirks, which are the sounds of throwing consonants in certain dialects and languages around the world. For example, in English and French, regional and cultural differences usually determine whether the letter “H” is also outdated in pronunciation, even if it appears in the spelling. Know when certain letters become symbols of belonging without words. Similarly, in Liu’s paintings, familiar blends together to capture moments of disconnection, especially for objects that cannot achieve their intended purpose. The result is a distraction that makes their nature or survival question. Liu also combines word playback and misunderstanding to further develop uneasiness and suspense.
