Reddit founder uses AI to get the final hug from mom

Alexis Ohanian posted a picture and a short video on X on Sunday, and the post has accumulated 20.4 million views in less than 36 hours later.

This photo is wholesome and is one of Ohanian’s favorite photos of his late mother. In the photo, his mother hugged a young Ohanian while sitting on the sunny mountain meadow. The smiling boy will grow up to be one of Reddit’s co-founders, husband Serena Williams and parents herself. The picture itself is innocent enough.

However, it is the video that attracted the attention of the Internet.

Ohanian used the new Midjourney AI video generator to create a short video clip that brings photos to animations and brings his mother to life in new ways. Both of them were helpless as the woman hugged the young ohanian and shook him back and forth.

Many of the answers were positive, and users shared their touch through videos and Ohanian’s message. “Damn, I’m not ready for my feeling. We don’t have a camcorder, so my mom doesn’t have a video of me…that’s how she hugged me. I’ve watched it 50 times.”

He said in a follow-up post: “I lost my mom about 20 years ago. Trolls can rest assured, I feel very sad. My family can’t afford the camera and use technology to generate a few seconds of animation from the stationary, which is equivalent to using AI to use AI to stabilize a recorded video, or a constant video, or a video we don’t want to (if a replacement video) (if a certain video) (if a certain video). Yes.”

Although many find the video a beautiful expression of son’s love for his mother, others don’t see AI. Some users reacted and horrified, likening similar AI videos to “black tar heroin” and “false memory”.

Personally, I feel very conflicted about the application of AI. I can see how comforting it is, healing. And I am wary of unwanted negative emotions. If Ohanian finds that the video moves on a spiritual or emotional level, then what about my rights? (I contacted Ohanian to ask if he had anything else to share and I’ll update this story if I received a response.) Unlike controversies like Chatgpt’s Studio Ghibli image, I can’t see how this post hurts anyone.

Even so, this will stop me. I get the same feeling when I stand on the edge of a cliff.

Generating AI can now quickly produce lifelike images, videos and voice, and I don’t think the world is ready for the consequences. I don’t think we even know what the consequences are.
