How to become an MVP spouse during job search

Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter
Even though I have never lost my job, I have listened to many people. Job search can even shake the most confident professionals. If your wife/husband/partner is in a thick state, then you are not a bystander – you are their teammate. Often, you feel like a player on a losing sports team. You also accept the player’s feelings and feel defeated. You want to help, but support is more than just saying, “You have this.”
Here are five ways your partner will appear during job search:
1. It’s their mirror, not their fixture
Rather than make suggestions, reflect on what you hear. Say something like “It sounds like you’re frustrated after the interview” instead of “You should say X.” Listen to build trust. Listen to more. Talk less. Uninvited coaches can break trust. Believe me this!
2. Respect grind, even if it looks invisible
Job seeking is more than just sending a resume. It is networking, rejection, update material, research, interviews – usually without obvious victory. Even if the results have not yet fallen, we must admit our efforts.
3. Don’t let their identities be hijacked
Unemployment or career transition can make people feel like they have lost their identity or purpose. Gently remind them that they are not the ones they do. Enhances the qualities that make you proud of your titles before you.
4. Interfere with family or friends
A well-intentioned relative may ask awkward question: “Still not have a job?” or provide helpless advice. Become a buffer. Change the theme. Protect them from microscopic confidence. The kind-hearted person asks, “How is it?” If they don’t voluntarily message, then it’s not going well. . . However, or they may be afraid of it.
5. Celebrating a small victory
Called back? Solid web conferences? celebrate. Job search is a marathon of uncertainty. Make progress visible and reward momentum – it can tolerate endurance.
Supporting someone during a job search is not about doing the job for them – it is about coming up in a way that helps them stay intact as they do it. Their struggle will affect you, but it will have a greater impact on them.
Love them. They need that, especially when they feel incredible.
