Report says Apple’s Airtag 2 may launch with iPhone 17

Apple’s Airtag tracking device is four years old, and despite many rumors about the new version, its hardware has never been upgraded.
Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a new airtag (probably called “airtag 2” or just “airtag”) with the iPhone 17 in September 2025, which could change in the fall.
This is according to 9to5mac, which quotes “reliable sources” that Apple is preparing to launch a new Airtag this fall. The same source told publishers that Apple could announce the device at an earlier date, but said it was unlikely.

The report also claims that the second-generation AIRTAG is compatible with Apple’s iOS 18.6, Apple’s next stable iOS version, currently available in BetaA (confused with iOS 26, the next major iOS version that is only a developer Beta, which can now be launched this fall).
The new Airtag should bring improved connectivity and range, with precise tracking ranges from 15 meters to 60 meters. Tampering with the Airtag and disabling its speakers should also be more difficult, making it harder to track unsuspecting people using the device. Finally, the new Airtag should improve battery management and have a low battery level alert.
Apple’s fall event will be one of the largest launch events in the company’s history, with the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and new iPhone 17 Air reportedly launching alongside other new devices, including the Apple Watch Series 11 and the new Watch Ultra.
