Doing this at the beginning of your job search will help prepare you in case your current company gives you a counteroffer.
Recruiters know something you don’t: They like people who stand out
As you begin your job search, list the reasons you are looking for something and answer this question – “What is most important to me in my next job or organization? What do I need to see or hear to believe this is a good choice?”
Make a long list of things that are important to you. Make your list a priority because if your company makes a counteroffer (and sometimes they will), you want to make sure they’re not simply raising money. You need to make sure they are working on some of the issues on the list.
It’s easy for them to buy you off with a raise. It’s hard to do anything else. So make a list of what will be important to you in your next job or organization in case you run into trouble.
