One of my all-time favorite summer barbecue recipes is the grilled shrimp with garlic. It turns basic shrimp into juicy smokyo, perfect for snacking or adding to your favorite recipe. Use them as a protein source for salads, stuff them into healthy shrimp tortillas, appetizers or with grilled vegetables as a main course.

If you don’t have a grill, don’t worry! You can easily cook in a cast iron skillet on the stove. But if you Do BBQ, light charcoal and smoky flavors really took them to the next level. Serve this dish at your next family dinner or a barbecue in the backyard with the side of your choice and enjoy!

Simple swaps and notes

To make this delicious grilled shrimp recipe, you will need the following key ingredients:

  • Prawns: To make things easier, make sure you get the kind of thing that is peeled and removed. The same goes for medium shrimp jobs; be careful, as they will cook soon.
  • olive oil: Melted butter or avocado oil will work as well.

Grilled shrimp skewers sizzle on the hot grill, coated with spices, steam rising in the background.

Should grilled shrimp be placed on skewers?

It’s all up to you. I found that shrimps are easier to grill when on skewers, as this makes them easier to turn them and also prevents losing anything between grids. Remember that if you are using wooden skewers, you will need to immerse them in cold water for about 15 minutes first to prevent them from burning.

Grilled shrimp ideas

If you want to do something different, there are many ways to switch this recipe. Here are some of my favorite variations of this recipe:

  • Try different proteins: Don’t want shrimp? Is it allergic to provide someone with shellfish? This delicious marinade can also be used for chicken or fish.
  • Exchange spices: For different flavors, try using different spice mixtures in the marinade. Italian and Cajun seasonings were good. I like adding Cayenne Pepper for a little kick, but this is totally optional.
  • Add fresh herbs: Try adding fresh herbs, such as chopped parsley or cilantro for extra flavor and brightness.
  • Make it spicy: If you are a spicy food lover, try adding a little chili or crushed red pepper to the marinade.
  • Add Dijon Mustard: If you prefer a strong flavor, this adds a creamy and a variety of flavors to the marinade.
  • Using fresh garlic: Fresh garlic works well in this recipe. Just replace 1-2 fresh garlic cloves with garlic powder. However, be aware that fresh garlic can burn on the grill and become bitter. If using fresh, try removing most of them from the shrimp to avoid burning.

What to serve with shrimp

How to store cooked shrimp

The cooked shrimps are kept well, so don’t be afraid to make this dish a large batch. You may need it anyway, because it tends to be much faster than you think! I don’t launch grills every day, so when I do that, I like to do a lot of things I prepare.

When I make this garlic grilled shrimp, I usually throw leftovers into salads and rice over the next few days. To store this dish, transfer it to an airtight bag or container and store it in one of two ways:

  • In the refrigerator In sealed container for up to 3-4 days.
  • In the freezer Just store it in an airtight storage bag or container for up to 3-4 months. When you are ready to enjoy them again, just let them stay overnight in the refrigerator.
  • Reheat: Heat in a frying pan over medium heat for a few minutes until heated.
  • Leftovers: Leftovers make a delicious shrimp sushi bowl!

Frequently Asked Questions about Grilled Shrimp

Below you will find the answers to the most common questions about this dish:

Can you grill frozen shrimp?

Grilled frozen shrimp is not recommended as the shrimp will be overcooked outside and stay cold and raw inside. Instead, start with thawing the shrimp. The best way is to let the shrimps naturally stay in the refrigerator overnight.

If you are short of time, just place the shrimp in a colander in the sink. Leave cold water on the shrimp for a few minutes. Then, let the shrimp sit for about 10 minutes. Check the shrimp and repeat until thawed.

How long does it take to grill shrimp?

The shrimp cooks very quickly, so it is important to keep a close look at the barbecue to avoid overcooking. After the grill is very hot, cook the shrimp on each side only about 2-3 minutes or until opaque.
