This card is powerful when flying with any airline and offers great benefits, including free checked bags and priority boarding.

Atmos Rewards Boost: The Basics

For an annual fee of $95, the card earns valuable Atmos Rewards points and offers some additional benefits.

Some of the best ways to maximize those points include redeeming them for premium cabins on oneworld partners like Cathay Pacific or Fiji Airways. However, Atmos bonus points are also reliable on short-haul domestic routes on Alaska Airlines or American Airlines.

One of the card’s standout benefits is the $99 annual companion fare (plus tax starting at $23), which you can earn on each account anniversary as long as you spent $6,000 or more in the previous anniversary year.

Generally speaking, this is a good choice for frequent flyers in Alaska or Hawaii, as they can enjoy various perks when flying with these two airlines, such as free checked bags and priority boarding.

However, if you’re looking for more premium benefits, such as lounge access, this card won’t meet your needs.

Atmos Rewards Ascent Pros and Cons

Benefits when flying with Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines

When flying with Alaska or Hawaiian Airlines and paying with Atmos Rewards Ascent, cardholders can receive one free checked bag for themselves and up to six other passengers on the same reservation. This saves you $35 per person each way on a checked bag, which is a significant savings if you plan to fly frequently with either airline.

Cardholders also enjoy priority boarding on Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines and receive 20% back on in-flight purchases on Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines when using the card.

If you’re working towards qualifying for Atmos Rewards, you can earn rewards by using this card. You’ll earn 1 tier point for every $3 you spend (up to a maximum of 30,000 points per year through the end of 2025). Starting in 2026, there is no limit to the number of Tier Points you can earn on purchases.

As mentioned above, one of the best perks of Atmos Rewards Ascent is the $99 companion fare (plus tax starting at $23). Unlocked by spending $6,000 or more on the card in the previous anniversary year.

As long as you fly Alaska Airlines with a friend or family member on a paid ticket at least once a year, you can benefit from this benefit.

Carly Helfand, director of points, miles and credit card content at TPG, used Ascent’s companion fares for a last-minute trip to Chicago with her husband. A round-trip flight from Portland International Airport (PDX) to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) cost $542.60 per person, but she used a companion fare to purchase two tickets, which cost $679.63.

Alaska Lounge + Member Discount

While Atmos Rewards Ascent doesn’t offer full lounge access, you can get $100 off your annual Alaska Lounge+ membership when you pay with this card. Membership is $795 per year.

This benefit alone offsets the card’s $95 annual fee. However, considering how expensive the membership is, this benefit isn’t that useful unless you’re already prepared to pay for an Alaska Lounge+ membership.

Other considerations

It’s worth noting that the card doesn’t offer basic travel protections such as baggage delay coverage, lost baggage coverage, purchase protection and trip cancellation/interruption coverage. If these benefits are important to you, you may want to consider other options.

Finally, this is a great card to take abroad because it doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees.

How to earn and use Atmos Rewards points

Earn Atmos Reward Points

With this card you will get:

• Earn 3 points per $1 spent on eligible Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines purchases
• Earn 2 points per dollar spent on cable TV, electric vehicle charging stations and gas stations, local transit and ride-hailing services, and select streaming services
• Earn 1 point per $1 spent on all other qualifying purchases

In addition, cardholders with an eligible U.S. bank account will receive a 10% bonus on all points earned.

TPG’s valuation through December 2025 estimates that Atmos Rewards points are worth 1.45 cents each.

This card may not be the best choice for spending categories outside of Alaska and Hawaii. However, if you go all out to earn Atmos Rewards points, swiping this card becomes more attractive.

Redeem Atmos Reward Points

Atmos Rewards offers best-in-class redemption rates for domestic travel. Short-haul economy class tickets start at just 4,500 points one-way.

One of my favorite ways to redeem Atmos Rewards points is to book a short-haul flight on American Airlines, such as a flight from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) to Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) in Louisville, Kentucky, for 4,500 points.

This is still a nice touch when redeeming for long-haul domestic flights, as flights from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) cost just 12,500 points for a one-way economy ticket.

Premium cabin points can be as low as 15,000 points one-way on shorter flights and as low as 30,000 points one-way on longer U.S. routes. For travel to Hawaii, these awards typically start at 15,000 points one way for economy class and 40,000 points one way for first class.

Atmos Rewards is part of the Oneworld alliance, which means you can book flights with partner airlines such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Qantas.

TPG Director of Travel Content Eric Rosen’s favorite ways to maximize Atmos reward redemptions include using 75,000 points one-way to book Cathay Pacific or Japan Airlines business class from the U.S. to Asia, and using 75,000 points one-way to book Fiji Airways business class from the U.S. to Fiji.

The downside of Atmos reward boosting

Although there are many advantages to holding a $95 annual fee Atmos reward enhancementthere are several reasons why you might not want to apply.

• This card does not include travel coverage.
• The card’s earn rate isn’t particularly high, and many other travel cards offer better returns on your spending.
• You must spend $6,000 on the card in your account anniversary year to earn companion fares.
• You must fly with Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines to get free checked bags or priority boarding.
