Jeff Altman, Hunter discusses the importance of branding and reputation for your career.
Warning signals of problems or they are not sure
brand. I know you don’t like this term. You rolled your eyes. “What brand am I talking about? Even caring about this kind of thing?”
I know the fact of this problem is that no one thinks that brands are important. You need to improve your mind, just like you are a box of detergent or cereals.
But when you pause to think, for career management purposes, if you are at my age, 25 or 40, the brand is the most important thing you will do in the next 5 years.
Let me give you different words. reputation. Reputation is based on your past. How to deliver when chips fall. How many people know this and how they know about your contribution when the chips go down. Let me provide some examples.
If you are not the person who does this, and everyone in your organization, then everyone in your company knows, how many people are that? If you are a major U.S. company, that’s probably 1/4 of a million people. However, all of these people know that the possibility of your contribution is almost non-existent.
Assume that’s the owner of your department, this is a large company. Abby, do you think it’s possible? 50? 100? 500? 1000? Again, all of these people are very unlikely to know that your particular achievement is. If you are a small company and everyone in the company knows you, 50, 75 people, 100 people! 300 people know you and what you do. Who else?
Part of the brand concept requires self-promotion. Someone outside your organization knows what you do and opens up your ideas. LinkedIn is now a great tool for it in many different ways. You are not limited to LinkedIn as a place for self-promotion. Consider a press release, the articles you write, the blog, a range of avenues where your ideas and contributions have meaning become very important.
I want to promote myself, whether it is with videos, podcasts, electronic zines, blogs, a variety of ways I do things so that people know me. I know I know a lot. But, even then, that’s not enough. I work on my new venue to promote myself.
You need to think creatively for yourself and what you can do in a meeting, for example, your contribution to something or your thoughts on something. If you are a beginner or for your person, it could be a club or a trading group related to your industry or field of expertise.
It doesn’t matter, it’s important that you’re going there to create a brand for yourself, which someone else will know. Otherwise, you might just get stuck in ruts and become another salary slave in your career.
