Manna Hotel New York City reviews

Nestled on a quiet stretch of New York’s Thompson Street, surrounded by elegant sawtooth oaks and Chinese elms, The Manner is a true boutique hotel that, as its name suggests, feels both stately and home-away-from-home (but a very, very stylish one). In this sense, The Manner is many things, as is the hotel’s striking design, which is bold, eclectic, yet sophisticated at the same time. Blink twice and you might be fooled into thinking some of these spaces are a very luxurious apartment.

Operated by Standard International, which Hyatt acquired in 2024, The Manner certainly doesn’t feel like a cookie-cutter points hotel; instead, its design is edgy and unique, curated by Milan’s Hannes Peer in collaboration with Standard International’s Verena Haller. The hotel’s public spaces and guest rooms are filled with a stunning collection of art and decoration, all of which tell a story as layered as the city it calls home, paying homage to New York’s timelessness and mid-century modernism (inspired by Gio Ponti, among others).

Here are five reasons why The Manner deserves a spot on your New York City hotel list.

Comfortable rooms are both nostalgic and sophisticated

Ellie Nan Stock/Essentials Expert

I’m both a nostalgic person and I love nostalgic hotels (no TVs in the rooms on purpose). If that sounds like you, you’ll probably feel right at home here – who needs a TV with a view like this?

A mid-century modern theme runs throughout the guest rooms (97 in total, including suites). Our Deluxe Corner King Room features a long, low, window-facing velvet sofa beneath a custom-designed glass chandelier by Peer. A warm and vibrant color palette is complemented by vintage touches like the lacquered red headboard (which matches the lobby staircase), while shimmering gold accents work perfectly with the interesting combinations of textures and materials throughout the space.

Covered in soft white sheets, this king-size bed is one of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept on (and now ranks in the top ranks of my favorite hotel beds).

The bathroom is just off the bedroom, close to the main door and a small but functional closet, a chic setting but with a more stylish look and feel than the bedroom. It features dark veined marble tiles, dimmable globe lights, sparkling gold hardware, fluffy bathrobes and luxurious bath products from sustainable brand Costa Brazil.

Although small, it was certainly enough for a two night stay.

The food itself is a reason to book accommodation

Ellie Nan Stock/Essentials Expert

Considering the size of the hotel, The Manner offers a wealth of culinary experiences with three dining options, a guest-only lounge and in-room dining menu. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the food, but I’m happy to report that it blew me away – in fact, I would go back and stay again just to enjoy the breakfast again, as well as some of the special snacks highlighted below.

Sloan’s

Sloane’s cocktail bar in the hotel is a all Atmosphere. While some may mistake its inviting ambience for scenery, this is not the case. Walking through the hanging velvet curtains, it feels like you’ve discovered a hiding place for those who love no Being seen (and would rather hide a dirty martini and a dozen oysters).

Located in a secluded location on the second floor, the dimly lit interior features sumptuous fabrics such as richly colored leather upholstery, and a stylish bar sits in front of an entire wall decorated with hand-applied gold leaf. We sat down and had some tapas which turned out to be so delicious that we skipped our dinner reservation elsewhere and stuck to the menu, which I thought was very interesting for such a classy atmosphere. Favorites include oysters on the half shell ($28), chicken nuggets ($24) and American cheese beef nuggets ($9).

otter

The Otter is the hotel’s main dining venue and a charming neighborhood restaurant, where chef Alex Stupak serves a seafood-focused menu set against a backdrop of stunning murals inspired by New York’s own heritage, the French Riviera of the mid-1900s, and Italian Mediterranean modernism. (The restaurant was closed during my stay, so I had to try it again.)

In-room dining

Breakfast in bed is always a treat at a hotel, but I can’t say that all hotel in-room dining menus are the same – even luxury ones. The quality of the food on The Manner’s in-room dining menu is truly impressive, with delicious, well-prepared dishes served hot and on time.

Breakfast was especially delicious, and we enjoyed classics like steaming cappuccino ($8), two beautifully poached eggs ($19), chicken sausage ($10), and mixed berries ($10). We were also wowed by a lemon gem lettuce Caesar salad ($20) and dry-aged New York strip steak ($74) at dinner in our room one night. But the real star of the show was the life-changing Boston Cream Pie ($19) that I still crave (I almost asked if I could order it for breakfast the next morning).

Guests have exclusive access to rooftop bar and stylish lounge

It’s always fun when a hotel has something a little unique – while some of The Manner’s restaurants are open to everyone, The Rooftop and The Apartment are reserved exclusively for guests.

rooftop

I was lucky enough to see the rooftop bar on the last weekend before closing for the winter, which features a small bar with comfortable, retro-chic seating and stunning views of Manhattan. This is definitely one of the busiest places to hang out in the hotel, especially at night. We enjoyed a few glasses of wine and small plates, and while not as impressive as the other dining options on site, it was nice to snack on while drinking (we came here for the view and atmosphere anyway).

apartment

Described by the hotel as a “private social sanctuary,” the apartment is a lounge-style space on the second floor of the building for guest use only. This area feels (perhaps obviously) like the most apartment-style space, with a collection of cool coffee tables and art books, mirrored walls, lots of pattern and eclectic design pieces, and plenty of comfy seating to enjoy your meal (food is served all day).

It’s suitable for both peaceful relaxation and socializing, although it never seemed too busy during my stay. Guests can enjoy The Manner’s signature Negroni here during aperitifs from 4pm to 7pm daily.

The location is quiet but feels close to the center of Soho

Soho’s location is unbeatable, with Manhattan’s best dining, shopping, arts and culture all within easy reach. Since The Manner is located in the relatively quiet neighborhood of Thompson Street, you can enjoy everything this lively neighborhood has to offer without sacrificing a relaxed atmosphere. Iconic restaurants such as Dante, Balthazar and Sadelle’s are just a few minutes’ walk away, as well as popular reservations like The Corner Store. There are many art galleries in the area, including the Judd Foundation and the Drawing Center.

Nearby subway access includes Spring Street Station (C and E trains), Canal Street Station (A, C, and E trains), and Princes Street Station (R and W trains).

Best of all, the hotel can be booked using World of Hyatt points

Ellie Nan Stock/Essentials Expert

Cash prices at The Manner vary based on season and demand, but I found prices for the next six months as low as $488 per night.

As a Category 8 World of Hyatt property, Standard Reward rates start at 35,000 World of Hyatt points per night.

When booking The Manner, you’ll need to use one of the credit cards that earn the most points on Hyatt stays, or one that automatically provides World of Hyatt elite status for added value benefits. These include:

Accessibility at The Manner

The Manner’s public spaces are Americans with Disabilities Act compliant, and the hotel has five ADA-compliant guest rooms with lowered thermostats and light switches, lowered peepholes and door latches, wider doorways, and fully accessible bathrooms.

As always, TPG recommends calling the hotel before booking to ensure the accommodation meets your needs.

bottom line

Ellie Nan Stock/Essentials Expert

There are so many great hotels in New York City and it’s always fun to discover a new one that makes my short list. I certainly can’t wait to get back to The Manner to enjoy the stunning rooftop views, one of my now favorite hotel beds, the moody atmosphere of Sloane’s, and the best Boston cream pie I’ve ever had.

If you’re a Hyatt Hotel loyalist, want a luxurious yet accessible stay in the city, or like the balance of elegance, high design, and nostalgia, I highly recommend The Manner, perhaps the coolest kid in Soho.
