“I’ve been thinking about the big picture,” Carey said. “I don’t plan where each line is going, but I have a big idea of what the situation is and how the onlookers will experience it. Somewhere in between.”
He meditated before Carey proposed the front line. He looked deep, critically at the space, staring at it, letting the room and light wash on him. He then placed the first line, from which the rest of the work almost exploded organically.
Carey has no plans for his work. He had an idea of where they were going to go and what they were going to achieve, but the vision stopped. In his art, Carey attempts to achieve a sense of spontaneity and organicism, where one thing is based on another, on another. You can say evolution was his inspiration.
Charles Darwin wrote in the Origin of the Species,
In this view of life, there are several abilities that are initially breathed into several forms or ones. And, although the planet has been cycling according to the fixed law of gravity, the most beautiful and wonderful forms have developed from such a simple beginning.
In this passage, Darwin discusses what we call the element of life. From the most basic form, “magnificence” appears. In many words, this is the evolution that works.
“It’s almost like my art is a slider of what nature is already doing, and it’s a hint that it’s arranging some forms to make more complex forms,” Carey said. “That’s how things are built; it starts with atoms, molecules and cells. We’re a series of simple things that fuse together to make them bigger than the whole part.”
Carey has gone through his fascinating evolution. Born on Curacao, the Dutch Caribbean island, he grew up in Southern California. His family discouraged him from becoming an artist. “My family is a very traditional Asian family and art is not a viable cause,” Carey said. “I just never saw it as an option.” As a teenager, he competed in racing in Ontario, California. The simple behavior of the audience will change the trajectory of his life. Carey was violated unconsciously (!) for participating in the competition. He was only nineteen when a policeman pulled him over and told him that he was suspending his driver’s license.
“The military was indeed my only choice at that time,” Carey said. “I had to rely on people to take my position. The military provided guaranteed work [that didn’t require a license]. Carey became an analyst in the U.S. Air Force.
In 2012, Carey had something that represented a shocking experience, like Oprah called the “Aha” moment. After graduating from high school, Carey had a friend who was having a tattoo. Like Kairi, his friends love painting. “When she was tattooed, I covered her and wade for a while,” Carey said. But his path was different from that of a friend. He moved to San Diego and began to realize that his only realistic career choice was to jump into the military first.
