Challenge gender norms, Bolivian skateboard collectively celebrates indigenous style – huge
In Cochabamba, Bolivia, a group of female skateboarders change their attitude toward indigenous traditions once at a time. Huge readers may recognize some of the women in a great series of photos by Celia D. Luna cholitas bravas. A new short documentary directed by Nowness-produced by Rebecca Basaure and Mariano Carranza highlights the group’s style and dedication to the community. The film traces the story of the Imillaskate members who built a skate park collectively, and their visits to local schools that emphasize self-affirmation and empowerment through skateboarding.
Until recently, Quechuan and Aymara women were called “cholitas” and actively excluded from society. Famous for its long braids, dome hats and full skirts, it was a hybrid of the styles produced by Spanish influences during the Inquisition – a style that evolved into a look full of indigenous culture and linear pride.
Deysī is an unfavorable co-founder and award-winning skater who describes the surprise of her mother when she first dressed up as a person Holita. She continued:
Some of our generation wear Pollera awkwardly because Pollera emphasizes your characteristics (your indigenous character), that we are like the daughters of Polleras women, like we are as indigenous people. This is part of my family’s legacy. Without family, I have no one.
The inspiring documentary also deals with gender inequality in Bolivian society, as Imillaskate members share the importance of mutual support in major life transitions such as motherhood and loss of loved ones. “We rely on each other, just like everyone else,” said another co-founder Ellī. “Because we as Quechuas as natives, we have a collective mindset.”
