“Armillaria” by Photographer Jonah Reenders

Photographer Jonah Reenders explores the world’s largest organism. Reders has studied environmental science and has worked as a field biologist for nearly a decade. As an artist, he is interested in the relationship between humans and the natural world, collecting data through images to weave narratives that question our ecological understanding. “Amilaria” explores queer ecology by investigating dinoflageae or giant fungi. The fungus is found in the Marhair National Forest and is estimated to be 10,000 years old. Reders collected some mycelium and has been recording its growth in agar plates. The project uses constructed narrative and exploration in the psychological landscape to try to understand our symbiotic relationship with ecological networks.
