Five poetic ways to choreography in dance and movie series can start over – Huge
How do we keep ourselves from paralyzing from change? A five-part series of international dancers, choreographers, directors, composers, and others come together to face increasingly pressing problems through movement.
The program, led by Jacob Jonas of the same name, is the latest project for film, and dance is a platform designed to make dance accessible and explore its intersection with music, fashion and film.
Over the past five weeks, these films have revolved around the theme of starting over again. Presented in the order they are created, everyone faces an unstable, heartbreaking world in which we live by emphasizing beauty and reverence for nature. They remind us that seeking total control is futile, and that humanity is just an opportunity in the cosmic timeline.
“Moncalvo” was the first to be released and came out of a period of deep sorrow and anxiety. “This movie comes after fighting Stage 4 cancer in June 2023, in one of the most challenging times of my life,” Jonas said. “Art becomes my way of dealing with the darkness and rediscovering the light as I navigate the consequences of disease and trauma.”
Shot in Moncalvo, Italy, its name rests with passion and intense uneasiness and juxtaposes it with intimacy and intimacy, reflecting the inevitable driving force and attracting recovery.
Each part of the series similarly conveys the way in which feelings are drowning. “Infinity” is characterized by the dancer performing repeated movements back and forth in an undescribable space. These numbers wear the smallest outfit in neutral tones, dragging each other from one end of the frame to the other. Called “Spine Studies,” the short film hones the burden, commitment and experience we all carry and what we inevitably need for releases.
The last in the series is the dramatic “Lotus” that quickly moves from one angle to another, such as “water in the river, fire, flames from insects and rainfall drops,” he said.
Overall, Jonas shared that the series brings together an international group of artists guided by curiosity and existential doubts. “The question is the answer,” he said. “Does life mean our life, or do we control us? Are we all in a cycle of death and rebirth? Are the sun, the moon and everything spinning? Are we spinning or still?”
