Bonhams auctions “Downton Abbey” costumes, props

Going back to the past: Follow all the fans of Downton Cathedral, it’s hard to say goodbye to the team. To release the third and final “Downton Cathedral” film in September, Bonhams held a farewell exhibition and auctioned off props, costumes and suits from TV series and movies.

The deal will be held online on Bonhams.com from August 18 to September 16 and will be open to the public at a free exhibition on Bonhams New Bond Street in London.

Highlights of sales include Michelle Dockery wearing a undecorated 1920s wedding dress by Mrs. Mary; Jessica Brown Findlay wearing Mrs. Sybil’s harem pants, and Maggie Smith’s dress wearing light pink and dark grey. It is estimated to range from 800 pounds of harem pants to 5,000 pounds of wedding outfits, which also include bouquets, veils and shoes.

The props are also under the hammer, including the most important bell used by the Crowleys to summon staff; the clapper board produced by the movie Downton Abbey: New Age, and the signature script for the first season of Downton Street, episode one.

Charlie Thomas, director of home sales and private and iconic collections at Bonhams UK Group, said the show is “the best example of British television and film production and we are excited to offer props and costumes for this landmark collection.”

Thomas called Downton “a story of “a detailed and meticulously studied aristocratic society in the early 20th century. Costumes and props show that the impressive attention to detail brought the world to life on the screen, which made it loved by millions of the world.”

“Downton Cathedral” was first aired in September 2010 and lasted for six seasons until 2015. The third movie, Downton Street: The Finale, will be released in September. It is produced by a Carnival film and has a focus feature and a universal picture internationally.

The franchise was created by Julian Fellowes and attracted more than 120 million viewers and won the Golden Globes, BAFTA and Primetime Emmy Awards.

The series’ producer Carnival movies are part of Universal Studio Group and will go from sale to shared life, a British charity for children with living conditions and their families.

This is not the first time Bonhams has auctioned movie souvenirs. In 2024, Bonhams auctioned over 450 props and costumes from the Netflix TV series The Crown, including crowns, headdresses, gowns, beds and other royal souvenirs.

The auction raised more than £1.7 million, more than three times the estimate.
