Openai’s new Chatgpt agent tries to do it all

Isa Fulford The head of research at Openai’s new Chatgpt agent needs to order a bunch of cupcakes, so she asked the AI tools to do it for her. “I’m very specific about what I want, and it’s a lot of cupcakes,” she said. “That one took nearly an hour, but it’s easier than I did because I don’t want to do that.”

OpenAI has launched a new proxy for using a virtual browser to complete tasks and to generate downloadable files, especially PowerPoint presentations and Excel spreadsheets. While there is no complete replacement for Microsoft Suite for workplace tools, the features included in OpenAI agents may eliminate some users’ dependencies on Microsoft enterprise software. The two companies are long-term partners and are currently negotiating contracts on continuing access to OpenAI models.

This version is part of Openai’s ongoing efforts to turn its nearly three-year-old chatbot into a money-making product. Although the tool is millions of users, it’s not a trivial matter when you consider the cost of training and running a strong AI model and the high salary you need to retain top employees.

In this case, an agent refers to an AI tool that is capable or at least attempts to veto third-party software and websites and makes a decision as per the user’s initial instructions to complete the journey of digital tasks. For companies that want to sell AI tools, especially those that focus on corporate customers, “agent” is the most popular buzzword.

“We are trying to build products with a lot of enterprise use cases,” said Yash Kumar, product leader at Chatgpt agent. In addition to its file generation function, agents can also fill out online forms, use programming terminals, and call online services such as Google Drive and SharePoint to the public API.

This is not the first agent Openai released in 2025. The new Chatgpt agent brings together OpenAI’s web browsing operator and its long-term processing in-depth research capabilities, both released earlier this year and is regarded as an agent by the startup. “I was a deep research team at the time, and Yash was on the operator team,” Fulford said. “We realized that the two products were very complementary and basically decided to combine the team.” The ChatGpt agent could switch between interacting with a visual browser, which could click like an operator, and a text-based browser where it could handle websites like in-depth research.

Starting today for Pro users, the launch of ChatGpt proxy will be upgraded to Pro, Plus and Team subscribers first. Business and educational submarines may gain access to the feature later in the summer. At launch, Pro users usually have a cap of 400 proxy prompts per month and provide 40 prompts for other paid users. It is not clear when the feature will be launched for free users of Chatgpt.
