Give yourself a pull

When you solve some dilemma, talking to others about it can give you a perspective knowledge, mainly because the other person’s mind is not trapped in the dark cloud like you do.

Overwhelmed minds tend to see everything as bad. The optimistic and witty part, whatever it is, is offline.

Richard Carlson describes this effect very well Don’t sweat small things:

A happy morning person may love his wife, his work and his car. He may be optimistic about his future and be grateful for his past. But by late afternoon, he claimed that he hated his job, thought his wife was a nuisance, his car was a trash, and his career was always his. If you blame him for your responsibility. His current dilemma. ”

The effect of cryogen is like a bad hallucinogen that turns your personal world into dark, anemia twins, a landscape of good possibilities.

In addition to unpleasant emotions, this emotion creates a direct practical problem because it prevents you from identifying and taking actions that may lift you out of trouble. The mind doesn’t know what to do in this state, because a world of positive possibilities is not a Anything Seems like a good idea. This is the moment to show your dilemma to other brains, currently unaffected by low-toxic drugs. Another idea – a mind belonging to a friend, therapist, or some kind of bartender can make you look at the “impossible” dilemma more clearly.

Any advice they provide may be familiar and direct, perhaps annoying. Sleeping on it. walk. Remember that all other times you have an impossible problem. Choose something else constructive for the time being.

This simple suggestion will usually work because the real problem is the indestructible pessimism that your emotions give, rather than the unsolvable nature of the dilemma.

Current dilemma

Even if they don’t offer advice, it’s safe to hear that someone is thinking about your plight without being too disturbed by it. Most notably, they obviously don’t see your situation as an insurmountable lifespan for you. They are more likely to see it as a brief bummer describing another week of human life (which is probably that). Trouble girl? Money worries? A confident mistake? You won’t say it!

Unsupported minds are wiser and more flexible. It can consider a range of possibilities. It can be a long-term perspective with an emotional thought that cannot be narrowed down. It can see that life is long and the sky has fallen many times.

RIPCORD table

Accessing a sober, unsupported mind is not always available, though, especially when you are working and facing a deadline. You don’t always want to bring problems to others for a variety of reasons.

For these occasions, I installed a simple device in the office, which I call “Ripcord table”. This is a piece of paper containing simple and neat instructions for myself, written by me at that time no consumed by frustration and pessimism.

I attached a pink page tag that reads “Ripcord” and it sticks out of the bookshelf behind me.

When I rotate the wheels and can’t move forward for a day, all I have to do is grab the label and pull the Ripcord, and suddenly I hold it in my hand, it’s the process of moving forward.

The instructions you write on the RIPCORD table will depend on the mental state you encounter most frequently. For me, it is usually a breakdown of motivation or loss of optimism.

Regardless of the specific details, the form has nothing, but is clearly explained step by step in this basic form:

…X and Y (perhaps Z) are suffering mental states that tend to stop your day, such as overwhelming, suspicion or fear.

A reaches E is a sober, wise move that has historically proven useful: other things for a period of time, diary for a few minutes, or breaking the task into a very small next step.

Ideal level of complexity indicated in a crisis

Suffering states are “skeptical of my ability”, “motivation collapse” and “outside states” on my own ripcord table, a term I use for superdistribution states, and I am just reacting and doing busy work without any intentional work anymore.

As an example, my explanation is:

  1. Get out of any “focus” – close the browser tab, let the phone go, and so on.
  2. Select any item from the to-do list
  3. Do a piece of work on this project

This is just enough instructions to make the day go on again. I may still be upset when I read the sheets, but I know these instructions come from a sober mind, and I know they provide a way to get rid of frustration, which is what I desperately want.

RIPCORD paper works because pulling RIPCORD is a physical action. It does not require thinking or reflection, nor does it require any other ability to compromise due to a downturn. I think I’ve pulled it before and didn’t help me.

Self-care: Something to pull

The instructions for your own sheets are best for a while after a low mood, when you gain practical wisdom again, but still remember what it feels like. Short suggestions. Two or three steps will lift you out of paralysis. The short message in the bottle comes from a wise mindset.

When you pull the wires, you don’t need to remember what’s on the Ripcord paper or how it helps. Actually, if you forget, that’s fine. All you need to know is that you fall freely. Just grab the handle and pull it.
