Flying with Kids is Easy: TSA reveals dedicated home screening lanes
The joy of a grand new travel adventure with family can sometimes be frustrated by a frustrating experience with airport security. Anyone who travels with kids knows that walking through the TSA filter line can smooth out – with diaper bags, strollers and everything else that a family vacation brings. However, the Transport Safety Administration just announced an initiative aimed at reducing the pressure on the screening process.
According to Kristi Noem, the Department of Homeland Security Secretary, the Flying Family movement is creating a dedicated home lane for parents traveling with their children to reduce waiting time and “enhance hospitality for families during the airport safety screening experience.”
This is the agency’s latest move to simplify the safety screening process for passengers. Earlier this month, TSA terminated its long-term policy, forcing most travelers to take off their shoes at security checkpoints. It also provides specialized lane and line privileges for military members at TSA Precheck lanes at specific airports near military bases.
Starting with Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) and Orlando International Airport (MCO), the Flying Family Program will be launched at specific airports across the country. Orlando is a travel hub for perennial families, such as Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando, so its airport was the first to have a new family driveway.
TSA said that in addition to these two airports, the program will soon take effect at the following locations:
- John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County, California
- Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu
- Charleston International Airport (CHS)
- Jacksonville International Airport (JAX)
- Rhode Island TF Green International Airport (PVD)
- Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, Puerto Rico
- Tampa International Airport (TPA)

Another benefit of traveling families will be the discounted price of TSA Precheck fees, TSA officials said. Although details and release dates for these discounts are not known yet, the new fee will be $85 per person instead of $100.
Secretary Noem also hinted that the TSA’s rules could happen in the TSA’s rules, the amount of liquid that travelers can carry with them. Currently, you are limited to travel-size containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less, which are displayed in a small transparent bag. Containers larger than 3.4 ounces (100 ml) must be checked luggage.
