Drone brand DJI will release robot vacuum in August

If vacuum brands like Dyson and Shark can risk going for hair care and killing it, who says drone brands can’t be the next big Roomba or Roborock competitor? DJI raised this question with the upcoming release of its first robot vacuum, Dji Romo.

Romo is nothing more than a rumor until the July 23 trailer started to tour on X. Reliable leakers allegedly found the announcement of China’s official DJI Romo account, which included the date of August 6, 2025, presumably the release date for China. There is no news about the decline in other countries, and tariffs could put work on the U.S. release date. However, many other Chinese-based robot vacuum brands, such as Roborock, Ecovacs and Dreame, can often quickly get their flagships into the U.S. market, so Romo’s U.S. distribution hopes to rise.

From the navigation POV, there is a very obvious overlap between the drone and robot vacuum. A large number of robot vacuums use LIDAR (light detection and range) technology to create in-app maps so that they can clean specific rooms or areas on commands. And, as you might have put together, several DJI drones also use LiDAR to create detailed 3D aerial maps. Maybe DJI will be the brand that ultimately avoids the barriers of science – because when it comes to on-floor chargers and ropes, I still have never tested a robot vacuum with a 100% perfect trail.

There is no specific information on the actual cleaning specifications of Romo, which can be provided to the public. But from the short trailer clip, it seems Romo has a self-righteous dock – it’s unclear whether part of the dock also houses a tank for motorcycles. Looking at the transparent view of Romo Pier, if I squint, I think I see multiple different compartments (not just dust bins or bags). Since DJI is familiar with the advanced pricing end of the spectrum of its drones (now wireless microphones and cameras), DJI’s first robot vacuum cleaner seems to be equally likely to be of quality. I predicted wipes, self-washing and stirring pads – works.

I found the most impressive robot vacuum cleaner under $500. You’ve never heard of it.

DJI is so late, DJI does have Intel where some other big brands have problems. Maybe the Dyson 360 Vis Nav is coming so that the DJI Romo can run.

The cost of DJI Romo is still in the air. DJI drones are high-end, so it would be surprising if DJI robot vacuums are not high-end either. I personally think it costs less than $1,000 and the tariffs may cause a steeper price than originally planned.

While I’m glad to see the unique way drone brands can use robot vacuums, there’s a good line between innovation and doing too much – the Roborock Saros Z70 and its robotic arms that hit or miss are a great example. Hope DJI won’t try to be so Romo is too strange to be a practical addition to ordinary people.
