Gabrielle Garland’s house portrait illuminates everyday life, personality and “social structure” – huge

Gabrielle Garland may not portray people in her square format, mixed media paintings, but the works may also be described as portraits. From mailboxes and landscape selections to colorful stops and glowing interior lights, her vibrant description of the house seems to be full of saturation colors that are almost obvious.

Garland’s houses are twisted, and even cartoonish houses depict various American vernacular styles, from ranch to bungalows to queens. Often, neighborhood events enter the scene, such as the shoulders of adjacent houses, power cords, trees or planes flying.

“Remember, you are the one who can be filled with sunshine. —Snow White, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (1937)” (2024), acrylic and oil painting, on canvas, 36 x 36 inches

Garland’s Works’ new exhibition will open next month at Miles McEnery Gallery with the title I will make you, my beautiful and your puppy. Her title is usually quoted from the movie, with the tone and scope of the subject as well as her house.

“The stairs, flower boxes and mailboxes are disproportionately expanded or contracted, revealing the distortion of the artist’s memory (that fuzzy area that mixes the structural logic with emotional noise),” the gallery statement said. Whether depicted at night, in fireworks, in storms or under the scorching sun, the details of each house gather with emotions within the scope of the film that make us unique features and quirks, while also having a lot of interest to the artist’s intellectual world.

Garland draws inspiration from her daily observations at home in New York and beyond. She often works from her own photos, sometimes using the images she finds. “My work may be interpreted as an investigation into sociophysical structures,” Garland told Swallow tail. “I believe it records a changing balance between our desire for independence and interconnection, the balance between the comfort and familiarity we seek and the strange disorientation we create.”

I will make you, my beauty and your puppy It will open on September 4 and last until October 25 in New York City. Find more information on Garland’s website and on Instagram.
