It is well known that it is difficult to accurately determine the materials used by certain sex toy manufacturers and the safety of contact with your most sensitive body parts. This is due to FDA regulations and how sex toys are classified: medical devices or novelty. The former category requires strict testing and standards, while the latter makes it easier to bring products to the market. However, there are some sure bets. You want your sex toys to be non-bird first. Porous materials are nearly impossible to completely clean and will lower the product over time and accommodate more and more bacteria. Second, you want it to be made of materials that won’t release chemicals, plastics, or other materials during regular use. Silicone is one of the trickier materials because it can be made in many ways and there are many different test standards around the world. Frankly, there is not enough research to test which silicone is the safest. Food grade is a FDA-regulated label, meaning silicone has been tested to ensure it does not immerse harmful chemicals into food. “Once you get below the food grade, it’s hard to verify a lot of things,” said Michael Topolovac, a co-founder of desire. Platinum-cured organic silicon is safer than standard (peroxide fixation) silicone because the chemical used to make the silicone more completely consumed in the process and nothing can be immersed in the body. For this reason, platinum-cured silicone is surprisingly odorless.
Medical grade is a label you see often, but if it is not determined by a specific regulatory agency or testing standard, it makes me wonder Why Not disclosed yet.
