According to TPG’s September 2025 valuation, the value of American Express membership reward points is 2 cents. This is almost the same as Chase Ultimate Rewards points and Bilt Rewards points, and in major airline and hotel plans, almost all points and mileage are higher.
However, that doesn’t mean that you get 2 cents per point every time you redeem them. Instead, we use this number as a benchmark for “good” redemption. To maximize your membership reward points, high value redemption should be 2 cents per point, while low value rewards are less than 1% per point.

There are many ways to redeem your American Express membership bonus points. However, they can offer a wide range of value. Some redemptions provide a fixed value for your perspective, while others may exceed our September 2025 valuation of 2 cents.

Value of AMEX points when transferring to travel partners
Usually, when you transfer AMEX points to one of Amex’s travel partners, you will usually find the most valuable redemption. AMEX works with the following 20 airline and hotel loyalty programs:
Amex points are transferred to most airlines and hotel partners in a 1:1 ratio, except for Air Mexico Rewards (1:1.6), JetBlue TrueBlue (250:200) and Hilton Honors (1:2). You can transfer AMEX points in increments of 1,000; the points transferred to airlines and partner programs are irreversible. Additionally, when transferring the reward to Delta Skymiles or JetBlue TrueBlue, AMEX’s excise tax is 0.6 cents per point (up to $99).

To maximize your membership reward points, we recommend transferring them to partner airlines. For example, you can book an aviation economic flight from the United States to Europe starting with a blue mileage of 25,000. If the cash fare on the same flight is as high as $700, that could be a lot of value.

The value of Amex point when redeemed through Amex Travel
While we are very concerned about the value of TPG’s transferable points, you can maximize them only if your favorite airline or hotel has available space. This can cause problems if you need to travel on a fixed date (especially during holidays, limited rewards from partner airlines may be limited). If you have exhausted all the other options, you can get an acceptable value by redeeming points through the AMEX Travel Portal.
Redeem AMEX Points via AMEX Travel
When booking a flight through Amex Travel, you will receive a fixed redemption rate of 1 cent per point.
However, if you have any of the following AMEX business cards, you can get a bonus when using a salary that qualifies for points:

Redemption of hotel accommodation and other travel Amex points
However, most other travel redemptions through AMEX Travel Portal will give you a value of about 0.7 cents per point.
For example, with most hotels, you can redeem points at a rate of 0.7 cents per through Amex Travel. And because these are third-party bookings, you usually won’t earn hotel points or elite night points for your stay.
An exception is Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts, a luxury hotel program that is only available for platinum and centurion cardembers. If you book one of these properties with points, you will receive 1% of the value of each point and offer Elitelike benefits to your accommodation, including free breakfast, room upgrades, checkout, usually a dining or spa credit. Additionally, these accommodations usually earn hotel points and elite night points.
For car and vacation rentals, your value is about 0.7 cents per point. As for cruise bookings made through the AMEX portal, you can get between 0.5 cents and 0.7 cents per point.
Overall, redeeming your AMEX points through the travel portal will not generate the maximum reward value. However, if you have an inventory of AMEX points in your account, or just want to save out-of-pocket expenses on flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises or vacation homes, it might make sense to redeem points through the Amex Portal.

Redemption of non-travel redemption AMEX points
Not all redemptions are travel-based – you can actually redeem Amex points as gift cards, Amazon purchases, and more. While these redemptions don’t produce great value in maximizing your perspective, for those looking to save money on non-travel expenses, the Amex point may be the answer.
- Gift Card: When redeeming AMEX points as gift cards, you can get 0.5 cents to 1% value depending on the merchant.
- Taxis in New York City: Redeem your AMEX point at a value of 1 cent per point for certain taxi fares.
- Amazon and online businessmen: When you link your membership rewards account with selected online retailers like Amazon, grubhub, and Best Buy, you can choose your salary at checkout and redeemed for the reward at a value of 0.7 cents per point.
- Coverage fees in your statement: Use points to pay for the qualifying account fee in your billing statement and get 0.6 cents per point.
How to Earn AMEX Member Reward Points
To redeem membership reward points, you must first earn them. The easiest way to earn AMEX points is to apply for a earning point card. Amex has several options to choose from, from advanced cards to grade-free fees cards that can reward daily business expenses.
Depending on the AMEX card in your wallet, you can spend every 1 to 5 minutes depending on the card and income category.
For example, Platinum card for American Express Earn 5 points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines or American ExpressTravel® (up to $500,000 per calendar year) and prepay for hotels booked by American Express Travel, spending 1 point per dollar on all other purchases. although BlueBusiness® plus American Express credit card Daily business purchases cost 2 minutes a day, with no category limit (up to $50,000 per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar).
