Large game hunter Jeff Altman talks about feature resumes.

Your online presence will help you find a great job

Hi, this is the big hunter Jeff Altman. Welcome to BS job search advice broadcast. For thousands of years, men and women have gathered outside the small village of Hudson.

They ask themselves a question, feature or chronological resume? Which one should I use? Well, today, I want to rest the pain of humanity and answer this question once and for all, is it a functional resume or a chronological order. While kidding, I hope you enjoyed today’s performance. And, if you do, offer five stars on iTunes or stitcher or tunein, whatever the website you happen to be using for a podcast download.

It can help others discover the show and help ranking. By the way, why don’t you come to JobsearchCoachinghq.com and join. It has great information to help you with job search.

So, let’s start scrolling. Let’s talk about functional resumes. I’m not a fan of feature resumes.

Did I mention that I don’t like feature resumes? This is a problem with the functional resume. They suggest you hide something. The relevant experiences they suggest that you have led to your application for this role are ancient.

They suggest you hide a big gap in your resume or employment history. So, even if you have relevant experience, I won’t call you. At best, I will send you an email, please send me a chronological resume.

why is that? Because time is precious, you are obviously trying to hide something. Obviously, you are trying to hide the blank to make the information old. Why do you want to send a functional resume? Because you did this work last week? Of course not.

But the fact remains that people use functional resumes. You know, the only thing that makes sense for a feature resume is if you are changing careers and moving forward with training related to your new role. Then, I can see that the feature resume works.

But beyond that, all you do is mask some of the information we need to know. And, if you think the employer is different, you’re just kidding. They are not.

If anything, they wouldn’t even stop and ask. They are just going to delete the key. You know, I can’t tell you. . . OK, let me tell you.

I recently participated in CFO searches. And I got a lot of searches for feature resumes. I respond to those who vaguely show relevant experiences, i.e., chromatic resumes.

Every time, the experience is over and has nothing to do with my clients because what you have done lately is most relevant to what matters to them. And if you’ve been away from CFO features for years, because you’ve been running a company and now it’s out, now you have to go back to the CFO role, you know, they won’t take you in. So, I simply say, abandon the functional resume.

You’re not kidding anyone. All you have to do is waste time and other people’s era. And, you know, don’t bother.

So this is today’s performance. Hope you find this helpful. If you do, again offer the show five stars in iTunes or Stitcher.

It can help others discover the show. It helps ranking.
